A loud thud caused Nina's eyes to flutter open on the dreary February morning in Seattle. She let out a yawn as she stretched her arms, glancing over to see Chris picking his phone up from the floor. He gave her a sheepish look as he came over, tucking his phone into the pants of his navy blue uniform before he sat on the edge of the bed.
"Sorry I woke you sweetheart," He apologized in a soft tone, gently reaching up to stroke her messy hair.
"It's fine," Nina yawned. "I'm glad it woke me because I want to make you breakfast. I guess I was just sleeping deeper than I thought."
"Don't make me breakfast," Chris told her as he brought his big hand to rest on her warm cheek as her sleepy eyes tried to stay open. "The kids won't be up to get ready for school for another hour and a half, go back to sleep."
Nina tried to force her eyes open as she fought him, "But it's Valentines day and I wanted to start your day off special with a nice breakfast."
Chris wrapped his thick arms around her, lifting her up just a little so he could hold her in his arms while leaving soft gentle kisses all over her sleepy face face, ending with a long slow kiss to her lips. He then laid her back down and pulled the blankets up to her chin, tucking her in before pressing another kiss to her forehead. He smiled as he looked at her sweet face, her eyelids already fluttering closed while he stroked her cheek with his thumb.
"Happy valentines day my precious Nina. I'll see you when I get home from work, my sweet," His voice was low and gentle, parting with a soft kiss to her cheek.
It wasn't hard to Nina to fall right back asleep but all too soon her alarm was going off again. She had a tradition of making heart shaped chocolate chip pancakes for the kids on valentines day and Nina wasn't about to break tradition this year so she got up and put her robe and soft slippers on but when she went to brush her teeth, there was a pink sticky note on the mirror.
Nina reached out and pulled it off, smiling when she recognized Chris' handwriting that had written 'If I'm having a hard day, I always think of your smile'
Tears instantly welled in her eyes from how touched she was from the heartfelt gesture her sweet husband had left for her. Nina put the note right back up on the mirror so she could see it and when she went to leave the bedroom, she found another pink note on the door reading 'When you come in a room there is a different feeling of kindness and peace that comes with you'
It seemed like everywhere she turned, there was a little note like this tucked somewhere and by the time she got to the last one, she had tears streaming down her face. Sophie was the first one who had come down the stairs for breakfast and instantly was struck by seeing her mother cry and raced over to hug her, "Mama, what's wrong? Are you okay? LOGAN! RYAN! COME HERE, SOMETHING IS WRONG!"
The brothers came racing down the stairs, making Nina laugh through her tears as her boys raced over. Ryan put his arm around Nina while Logan asked, "What's going on mom? Do you want me to call dad?"
"I'm fine," She kept on laughing while wiping at her tears. "Your dad just wrote me some really sweet notes that made me emotional."
"Oh that's right, it's Valentine's Day," Ryan remembered.
"What did Daddy write?" Sophie was curious.
Nina smiled as she handed Sophie the notes, letting her read them because she not only wanted her children to know how lucky they were to have Chris as their father, but also show them what it looked like to have someone love you and tangible ways they could show others their own love.
She got breakfast going and by the time that the kids were all seated at the table and Nina was giving them pancakes, Sophie was crying her own tears as she exclaimed, "Dad is the sweetest!"
