"I still can't believe we are the only people who are getting coffee at 5 in the morning," Jake announced when he walked into the coffee shop with Chris and Sarge in tow.

"It's because we're not a drive thru," Nina answered him, handing Jake his usual drink. "But I like that you guys are the only ones here, then I get to spend time with you both."

Jake just chuckled, "It really is pretty ridiculous how sweet you are Nina."

Nina blushed while Jake walked over to the nearby table and Sarge went with him, allowing Chris to wrap up her little frame in his arms and smiled down at her, "He's right you know. You really are the sweetest and I love it."

She didn't say anything in response, Nina just hugged his middle before leaning up to press her lips to his softly. Chris smiled against the kiss and when the two parted, Nina picked up Chris' Americano and followed him over to the table. He took a seat and then opened his arms for her, so Nina came over and sat on his lap while Chris loosely wrapped one arm around her waist while the other picked up his coffee.

Seeing Nina right there made Sarge get up and come over to rest his head in her lap, knowing she would scratch him behind the ears and he was right.

"So Jake, how was your date with Sarah last night?" Nina asked.

Jake gave her a confused look for a minute before piecing together that must have been the excuse Sarah gave her sister and quickly recovered, "Oh um it was great! Yeah really nice."

At that moment, the coffee shop phone rang and Nina hopped up off Chris' lap to go answer it. Once she picked it up and greeted the person on the other end, she walked back into the backroom, leaving the officers alone.

"That was a close one. Sarah didn't tell me that she told Nina we were on a date last night. I guess she figured that was something Nina wouldn't question," Jake shrugged.

"Well thanks again for going with me last night. It means so much that you came with me to help me pick out a ring for Nina," He replied in a hushed tone.

Jake patted his partner's shoulder and told him, "Of course, Chris. I'm honored you wanted me to come with you. And it meant a ton to Sarah that you asked her to come too."

"I just hope Nina likes the ring," He was nervous.

"She will," Jake assured him, knowing he picked out the perfect one. "So when are you going to ask her?"

Chris scratched at his stubbled jaw before reaching down and patting Sarge while he said, "I'm not sure yet. I want to do something really special and romantic for her though but I haven't thought of the perfect way yet."

Right as Jake opened his mouth to say something else, Nina came walking out of the back room so he quickly shut it again. Nina came hurrying over to Chris and quickly pressed a sweet kiss to his cheek before exuberantly buzzing.

"I have a surprise for you!" Nina's caramel eyes sparkled while she tucked some of her short hair behind her ear.

"What's that babe?" He asked.

"Well I didn't think I could get arrange it for that day but it ended up working out and anyway, you know how you've always wanted to go skydiving?" She began and he nodded his head. "Well this Thursday for your 28th birthday, you're going!"

Chris' blue eyes lit up as he grinned his pearly whites at her, "Are you serious?"

"Yep!" Her eyes were squinted up with her big smile, loving getting to make him excited. "Happy almost Birthday!"

Chris didn't say anything in response at first, all he did was gently grab Nina's hips, pulling her down to sit in his lap once again. She wrapped her arms around his hunky shoulders and his came around her waist before his blue eyes gazed into hers and told her, "I love you Nina."

He didn't even let her say it back because the moment he was finished saying those sweet words, his lips were on hers. Chris kissed her deeply but they pulled apart when Jake started making gagging noises.

"C'mon you guys, you're going to make my breakfast come up," Jake playfully teased them.

"Like you wouldn't be doing the same if Sarah was here?" Nina quipped.

He just shrugged, making Chris and Nina laugh although their joy was short lived. Over their radios, both Chris and Jake heard a call. Quickly they started listening in and when they heard the location of where they were requesting officers, they both realized it was just a couple blocks away.

"Nina, we've got to go," Chris quickly stated.

She stood up and watched as the two men sprung into action and Chris whistled, making Sarge up and ready in a second flat. Nina knew that they had a dangerous job but hearing the call that sounded urgent and seeing how quickly they responded made her heart beat quickly.

Before they could hurry out of the coffee shop, Nina called out for Chris. He quickly poked his head back in the door to listen to her as she told him, "Be safe."

"I will. I love you Nina," He honestly said before he disappeared running down the street with Jake and Sarge.

The rest of the morning, Nina nervously cleaned the shop until customers started coming in. It was nice to have something to take her mind off of everything but that didn't last long. The store phone rang and she answered it, immediately relieved to hear Jake's voice.

"I'm so happy to be talking to you! I was nervous this morning when you guys left," Nina told him, expecting Jake to crack some joke or tell some ridiculous story about what happened but that wasn't what she was met with.

Jake's tone was anything but joking as he started, "Um Nina...."

"What?" Her voice cracked.

He took a deep breath before telling her, "Nina.... Chris was shot."
