Nina's head shot up when she heard a loud thud followed by screaming and wailing in the front yard. She instantly recognized the cry of her youngest son and she dropped the pile of laundry she had in her arms and bolted down the stairs faster than an olympic athlete.
The second that her feet reached the front door, she yanked it open and instantly tears came to her eyes. She saw Ryan laying on the ground, blood pouring from his nose and tears running down his face. He was clutching his ankle and Chris was trying to get him to calm down while Jack and Logan stood by and helplessly watched.
"Ryan, RyRy, what's wrong, what happened?" Nina buzzed over him as she dropped to her knees and examined every inch of him.
He just kept wailing at the top of his lungs, unable to get any words out. She was instantly thankful for her training in nursing and checked him for any broken bones but found that the worst damage was a twisted ankle, some future bruises, a bloody noise, and a terrible scare.
Once she knew that he was alright to move, she scooped up her little son and carried him inside to lay him on the couch. Chris followed behind like a puppy dog after sending their other sons up to play with their sister. He felt completely helpless, a feeling which he loathed, and watched as Nina sprung into action.
She grabbed a wet rag and an ice pack before running back to where Ryan was on the couch. He still was sobbing and Nina assured him in her soothing voice, "Shhhh, honey it's alright. Everything is okay," As she wiped away the blood from his nose and held the ice pack on his ankle.
By this point his wailing was down to sniffling and she kissed at his face and stroked his hair until his tears had stopped completely. She bit at her bottom lip, her heart aching to see his puffy blue eyes but kept on assuring him he'd be okay. When he finally had settled down, Nina got him a pillow to lay on and tucked him in with a blanket on the couch, singing to him until he fell asleep.
The entire time, Chris just stood in the living room, totally helpless... and guilty.
He watched as Nina stood up, kissing Ryan's sleeping face one more time, before she turned and walked into the backyard to have a breath of fresh air. Chris followed her outside and found her sitting on the top step of the deck so he took a seat next to her.
"What happened?" She asked him, curious as to what made their little son end up in such pain.
"Well...uh..." Chris trailed off, reaching up to scratch the back of his neck. He didn't want to tell her and he briefly even thought about leaving out a few details but ended up not being able to lie to his wife and told her the truth, "I was mowing the lawn and the boys were playing a game and they wanted to get on top of the fence so I helped them climb up and-"
Before he could even finish, Nina was on her feet as she shouted, "YOU LET THEM PLAY ON TOP OF THE FENCE?!"
Chris blinked slowly, not even fully knowing how to process the response his wife had. Nina never got angry... in fact, he tried to search his memories for when he had seen her angry before and he could only come up with the time that Sarah had told the story about Nina streaking once, and the time right after they got married that Chris had promised he'd get her car fixed and then forgot... which resulted in her being broken down on the side of the road. Those times she had been mad, huffing and pouting but quickly coming around.
Normally she just got upset and cried, but anger wasn't her default response. He thought about those memories of her being mad but this was different... this was anger. Chris had known Nina for a decade and he had never in that entire time heard her yell in anger, but now he had.
Chris had never seen her like this. She stood in front of him, eyes wide, jaw set, and fists balled tightly. Her nostrils flared and anger burned in her eyes... anger at him. When Chris didn't answer, she waved her arms wildly while she kept on shouting, "HOW COULD YOU LET HIM DO THAT?"
