When the doors to the hospital opened, Jake stood up from where he had been in the waiting room so that Nina would see him. She hurried in and frantically looked around and quickly spotted him and came over.

As she was walking toward him, Jake couldn't help but notice the large difference from seeing Nina this morning and seeing her now. Her short hair that was styled this morning and fell in soft waves was now messy and pushed away from her face, obvious she had been nervously running her hands through it. Her shiny eyes were glossy and there were tears still streaming down her cheeks. Her face was red and blotchy from crying and he could see her lip quivering and her small hands shaking.

The second she made it to him, Jake wrapped her up in a big hug. He held her tight against his chest while Nina sobbed into his navy blue uniform. That's how the pair stood for a long time in the waiting room until Nina had cried all of her tears. Jake put an arm around her and led her over to one of the chairs and he sat next to her.

"They took him in for surgery but they think he's going to be just fine," Jake assured her.

It still didn't make Nina feel any better. Her precious Chris was still laying on a table somewhere back there with a bullet in him and that thought was enough to make her tears start all over again and silently run down her cheeks.

Jake had called Chris' mom as well as Sarah so it didn't take long for all of Chris' brothers to arrive with their mom as well as both of Nina's sisters and her nephew. Noah climbed onto Nina's lap and she held onto him tightly with one arm while the other held onto Cathy's hand.

Chris' eldest brother, Cole, kept going up to the front desk with Jake to see if there were any updates and after a couple hours, they were happy to hear a doctor was coming out to talk to them.

"Officer Davis?" A doctor called, walking into the waiting room.

"That's me," Jake stood.

After the doctor shook his hand, he told him, "I have some news about Officer Evans. We finished his surgery and he's going to be just fine. It took us a little while because the bullet was lodged in fairly deep in his side and there was a little damage to some organs but we fixed everything. He's going to be off his feet for a little while to heal up but he'll be good as new."

"Can we go see him?" Nina was quick to ask.

"He's still asleep and he's probably going to be for quite a while, but in just a little bit you can go see him," The doctor answered before walking away.

Once they all sat back down and had felt the relief come over them, Cathy told Jake, "Alright, now that I know he's okay, tell me what happened."

Jake nodded as he leaned forward and rested his elbows on his knees while Sarah rubbed his back and he started, "Well we were with Nina when we got a call about a robbery. When we got there, the guy was holding the cashier and had a gun to her and said if we got closer he'd shoot. Everything kind of started escalating and so I shot next to him to scare him and it made him let go of the cashier and then Chris took the opportunity to run and tackle the guy to the ground but he shot Chris right before Chris got to him."

"So did Chris get the guy?" Cameron was curious if his brother did.

Jake just chuckled, "What do you think? It's Chris, of course he did. He wrestled the guy to the ground, got the gun out of his hands and handcuffed him. I got the guy into the police car before I realized how back Chris was hurt. He kept insisting he was fine until he passed out."

Nina couldn't help but smile as she shook her head, "Why does that not surprise me?"

"I told you a long time ago Nina, that guy is so perfect it's actually really annoying," Jake said with a smile on his face.

Everyone was so happy to hear that Chris was okay but they all felt better when they finally could go into the room to see him. Nina walked over to one side of the bed and gently sat down, looking at his still frame.

His hunky frame was covered in the blue hospital gown and the white sheets were pulled up to his waist. She couldn't see where the wound was on his side but she could see a couple black and blue bruises on his arm as well as his swollen lip and a small cut up by his eyebrow. Even though he was asleep, she couldn't help but lean in and kiss his cheek softly before resting her hand on top of his.

Everyone hung around for a while but eventually everyone decided to leave and let Chris rest. Cathy stayed a while longer but eventually decided to just come back later but Nina could pry herself from his side.

When it was turning to evening and Chris still wasn't awake, Nina found herself getting sleepy. She was exhausted from crying and all the emotions she had gone through today and it wasn't long until she had fallen asleep in the small uncomfortable chair in the little room.

While Nina was sleeping soundly, Chris' blue eyes had fluttered open and struggled to adjust to the bright lights. He blinked quickly while taking in his surroundings and soon everything that had happened that morning came rushing back to him. Chris looked around the room but his eyes stopped as soon as he saw the love of his life curled up in the tiny chair fast asleep.

A soft smile came across his face and he instantly relaxed, knowing that Nina was here. He just laid there, watching her sleep for a long time. Chris was so stiff and sore that eventually he went to move his body but immediately gasped from the pain when he tried to do so and the noise woke Nina up.

"Chris!" She rubbed her eyes, seeing he was awake and quickly hurried over to the bed. "Sweetheart, are you alright? How do you feel? Can I get you anything?"

"I'm fine," Chris smiled at her sweet caring nature. He patted the empty spot on the bed so she sat down and she wrapped her little hands around one of his big ones and held it in her lap.

The two just gazed into each other's eyes, staring lovingly into each others eyes and saying everything they wanted to by just that look. Nina lifted Chris' big hand up and kissed his palm before resting it against her cheek and closed her eyes, so thankful that he was alright.

"You know, you lied to me," Nina broke the silence and brought his hand back down to rest in her lap.

Chris moved his head against the pillow and asked, "How's that?"

"I told you to be safe this morning and you said you would.... If this is your version of safe then you and I have very different definitions," Her sweet voice teased him.

He couldn't help but softly chuckle before he asked, "You're right, I guess I did lie. Forgive me?"

Nina gave him a smile that warmed him from the inside out while telling him, "Always."
