"What in the world are you doing up this early in the morning?" Nina held the phone up to her ear as she hurried down the empty Seattle street in the dark morning to open the coffee shop.
"Noah woke me up, he's sick but I gave him some medicine and put him back to bed," Katie told her sister.
While she fished her keys out of her purse, she made a sad face while replying, "Aw poor Noah! After work I'm going to buy him a new lego set or something to bring over to him. I'll face time Chris too before he goes on his shift so Noah could see him, I bet that would cheer him up!"
"Nina, you're just the sweetest, I love you so much. Noah would love that," She told her. "How is your morning so far?"
"Well I'm just getting to work, but it's not the same with Jake and Chris on night shift. I always look forward to starting my day with them. I'm wearing the necklace Chris gave me though," She happily replied.
"Don't be too sad, you'll see your lover boy tonight... aren't they coming over for dinner?" Katie asked.
By this point, Nina had gotten into the coffee shop and had taken her coat off and turned the lights on. Before she could do anything else or answer Katie's question, she saw a man knocking on the glass door of the shop.
"Hey Katie, can I call you back? Someone is here at the shop so I'm going to tell him we're not open yet," Nina explained.
"Oh sure!" Katie told her. "Have a good day at work."
She thanked her older sister before hanging up the phone and walking over to the door. Nina smiled warmly at the man who was obscured by the dark morning before unlocking the door and kindly told him, "Hi, sorry, we're not quite open y-"
Before Nina could finish her sentence, the man pushed her back into the shop and pulled out a gun while he demanded, "Give me the money in the register."
She stood there, completely frozen in fear as he held a gun on her. Nina felt like her feet were planted in cement and her heart was beating so loudly that she swore he could hear it. When the man shoved her, it kicked her into gear and she opened the register to dig out the money. The second she had put it in the bag, the man grabbed it and ran back out the door, leaving Nina trembling and terrified.
Nina grabbed her phone and dialed 911 and it wasn't long before a policeman was at the scene, asking her all kinds of questions about what the man looked like, how much he took and things of that nature for the report.
"I'm sorry ma'am, what was your name?" He asked, looking up from his paper.
"Um, N-Nina Wilson," She still was shaken up and had tears still trickling down her cheeks.
"Hey, aren't you Evans' girl?" Was his next question.
This took Nina by surprise, but she didn't quite mind it. In fact, she liked the sound of being called his girl but she stuttered through her answer, "Well we're not, um... I mean... sort of, but well... we're friends."
"Miss Wilson, why don't you come back to the station with me? You'll be safe there and I'll call Officer Evans to come down," He offered.
"Oh no," She held her hands up in protest while sniffling. "No I don't want you to worry Chris. He's working the night shift so he's sleeping now and I don't want to bother him. So please, don't call him."
"Sorry ma'am, but have you seen the size of Chris' arms?" He chuckled. "I don't want him beating me up when he finds out I didn't tell him what happened to his girl. He'd probably send Sarge after me too and I don't want to be on the receiving end of that."
