"Here, hold your pencil firmly and just be confident when you're drawing your line," Nina spoke from where she was sitting in Chris' lap.
His stubbled chin was resting on her shoulder and looked down at the notebook in her lap that they both were sketching on. His blue eyes studied his drawing of Sarge against Nina's and saw the huge divide between them.
Chris just chuckled as he asked, "How am I supposed to be confident when my drawing looks like a blob with ears?"
"No it doesn't! I love it," Nina protested, earning her a kiss on the cheek.
"Mhm, my precious Nina," He snuggled her tight against him before kissing her cheek yet again. "You are so sweet but you're a liar. My drawing is terrible."
"Well I don't think so because you made it and I love it," She firmly stated.
Chris didn't even say anything else. All he did was wrap his arms around her waist and hold her tight while nestling his nose against her neck and slowly starting to kiss along her soft skin. The couple had been together a few months now and neither had ever been happier. Everything just felt so natural and they didn't know that it was possible to be this happy.
While he was working her way along her neck, Sarah came walking in the door, the sunshine from the unusually bright April day coming in behind her. She let out a loud groan before telling them, "You guys really have got to stop this on the couch. At least go to Nina's room or makeout on the couch at Chris' house!"
"Hey," Nina started while looking over at her sister who made her way to where Sarge was playing with a toy on the floor and patted his head. "I believe you were the one who was making out with Jake last week while he had his shirt off."
Chris snickered while Sarah gave her sister a look but then shrugged, "Touche."
Before anyone could finish out the conversation, Nina looked down at her watch and gasped, "I have to go!"
"Where are you going?" Sarah asked.
Nina hopped out of Chris' lap and slung her purse over her shoulder telling her sister, "I have a dentist appointment! I'll probably be back around 5:30."
She hurried over and gave Sarge rubs behind his ear and then kissed Chris on the lips sweetly before jogging out the door and to her car. Once she was gone, Chris moved from his spot on the couch to the floor where he grabbed the little rope and let Sarge get the other end in his mouth before playing tug of war with him.
Sarah watched for a moment before she tossed her shoes off and took a seat on the floor by him. She had been spending quite a bit of time with Chris just by nature of him being around often since he and Nina began dating, but now that she was with Jake, the foursome did a ton together. She very rarely was alone with Chris and she decided to take advantage of the moment.
"Everything okay Sarah?" He wondered since she was being uncharacteristically quiet. "Is everything with Jake alright?"
"Oh yeah!" Sarah perked up at the mention of his name. "Things are great between us. I mean, it's still new and all, but I really like him."
"He really likes you too Sarah, he talks about you all the time," Chris was honest while Sarge ran around him, trying to get the rope.
She smiled before that silence fell over them again. Chris eyed her before wrinkling his eyebrows up in confusion, "Sarah, are you sure you're alright?"
"Yeah, I am," She was honest. "I just kind of wanted to talk to you about something."
He didn't really have any idea what she would want to talk to him about. It actually made him concerned which was unusual for the steady man who was rarely ever frazzled. Chris put the rope down and patted Sarge's behind, telling him to sit down which the dog obediently did and curled up in his masters lap.
"What is it?" He asked, stroking Sarge's fur as he did.
Sarah leaned her back against the coffee table and crossed her legs at her ankles before she began, "I just wanted to tell you how happy I am that you're dating my big sister."
His broad shoulders relaxed before a soft smile appeared on his lips, "Thank you Sarah."
"No, Chris I mean it," She looked right into his eyes. "I know I tease Nina a lot, because I'm the little sister and that's what I do, but I really love my sister and I look up to her a lot. I think because of her being the middle child and being more of a quieter personality, she just always was kind of in the background. Then when she couldn't handle being a nurse and ended up being a barista, I know that really affected her and she felt like a failure."
"Yeah she's told me a little about that," Chris sadly nodded.
Sarah tucked some hair behind her ear before telling him, "Well I just feel like because of those things, she viewed herself so poorly... like she was the boring failure sister. But she's never realized what a truly amazing person she is. She's so kind hearted, compassionate, loyal, and dependable. If I ever needed anything, she would be the first person I would call because she'd be there in a second. She would do anything for anyone but all of those characteristics she has aren't really things that people really get praised for and sometimes don't even really appreciate."
She took a long breath before finishing out with, "I guess what I'm trying to say is thank you for loving Nina for all the amazing things she is, and for celebrating her and the person that she is."
Chris sat there for a long moment, soaking in all of the words that Sarah spoke. After he had time to churn them over, he told Sarah, "Well, there are a lot of things I'm not. There's a lot of things I'm not good at. But I adore your sister and if there's one thing that I hope I'm good at, it's loving Nina, because she makes it so easy. I'm just so glad that she loves me back."
Because Nina was so kind and sweet, Sarah had always felt protective of her. She always wanted someone for Nina who really treasured her and now that she had Chris, Sarah was just so happy. Hearing Chris' honesty about how much he loved Nina made her eyes get watery before she closed the gap between them and hugged Chris tight.
Once they shared their moment, Sarah got up and made herself a coffee before coming back into the living room where Chris had resumed his position playing tug of war with Sarge. Sarah curled up in one of the big chairs and she was going to start reading a book she had but the little sister couldn't help but ask Chris, "Do you think you and Nina will get married?"
Chris stopped what he was doing, lowering the rope for a moment before giving Sarah a sideways smile, "If there is a way that I can convince that wonderful woman to marry me, you can be damn sure I'm going to do it."
