"Welcome home baby Jack," Nina smiled as she followed Chris into their cozy home as she held the tiny baby in her arms.
The baby squeaked as he tried to move his arms but was restricted by the blanket that was wrapped securely around him. Nina leaned down to kiss him softly and when she looked up, she found her husband staring at her.
"You look so beautiful with our baby in your arms," Chris beamed, walking over to kiss her cheek.
"It's because Jack is so perfect. He looks just like his daddy with those blue eyes," Nina gently moved the blankets away from his face so they could gaze at him.
While they were having their moment, they heard the sound of paws on the floor before Sarge appeared. He happily bounded over to his master and his tail wagged at lightening pace when he got scratches from Chris.
"Hi buddy, we brought you home a brother!" Chris let the dog lick his face. "Want to meet him?"
Chris walked over to the couch before he patted his lap for his sweet wife. She carefully snuggled in his lap, making sure to securely hold Jack in her arms. Chris loosely wrapped one of his muscular arms around her while he used his other to signal for the obedient dog to hop up on the couch.
The dog sniffled the tiny baby, getting used to his smell before laying down and putting his head on Nina's leg. She used one hand to reach down and pet the dog while telling him, "Don't worry Sargey, you'll always be our baby too."
"He'll be so happy to have someone to play with when Jack gets older," Chris smiled at the thought as he rested his stubbled chin on Nina's shoulder.
Nina felt like her heart was going to burst when she thought about their future as a little family and with her emotions so high, she figured she would cry but she was just so exhausted. She was so comfortable sitting in Chris' warm lap while she held Jack. This moment was so perfect and she relaxed so much that her eyelids that were heavy with exhaustion began to slowly close. Nina started falling asleep but when her head began to fall, her body responded by jerking back up.
The motion startled Jack, causing the tiny baby to wail which caused Nina to hop to her feet. She walked back and forth while rocking him to try to calm the crying baby and it was then that she realized how much her tired arms ached. Chris had pushed himself to his feet and came over, taking the baby in his arms and cradled Jack against his firm chest, telling Nina he would take care of it.
She would have protested but she was just so exhausted. Nina tried to stifle a yawn as she walked into the kitchen, pulled out Chris' favorite mug and got to making the exact drink she used to serve him every morning when he and Jake would come in.
While she was waiting for the machine to heat up, she smiled at the memory. She couldn't believe how different her life was. It had gone from her looking forward to the mornings when she would see Chris come in with Jake and Sarge, to now her coming home from the hospital with their baby. The handsome officer had stolen her heart from the moment she laid eyes on him and to this day, nothing had changed.
Nina turned the knob on the coffee machine to have it pour into the cup while she yawned. As she waited for the coffee to fill the cup, she blinked slowly and each time it felt like her eyelids grew heavier and heavier.
She hadn't even realize that she had practically fallen asleep until she heard Chris' low voice exclaim, "Nina!"
Her eyes shot open and she realized that the cup of coffee had begun to overflow and spill onto the counter. She quickly shut the machine off and threw a rag on the spilled coffee to keep the puddle from getting longer.
"I was trying to make you an Americano," Nina sighed, rubbing at her forehead. "I guess I just... wasn't paying attention."
"No, it's because you're exhausted," Chris chuckled softly, crossing the kitchen to kiss her cheek. "C'mon, you're going to bed to take a nap."
"No, no, i'm fine," She quickly told him, trying to get back to cleaning up.
Chris took the rag out of her hand and tossed it in the sink before putting his hands on the curve of her hips and looked down into her warm eyes while smiling softly, "No you're not. You're about to fall asleep standing up. You need some rest."
"I'm just a little tired, it's really okay," She insisted. "You're tired too."
"Yeah, I'm a little tired but I didn't give birth to a baby yesterday and I also got to sleep a little last night... did you sleep at all?" Chris asked her and by her dropping her eyes from his, he knew that she hadn't.
Nina put her hands on his hunky arms, assuring him, "I'm really alright sweetheart. Besides, I need to stay awake to take care of Jack."
"I already put him in his crib up in our room. I will take care of him and you will sleep," Chris chuckled.
She opened her mouth to tell him once again that she was fine, but he wasn't going to hear any of it. The muscular police officer put an arm around his wife's back and hooked the other under her legs to scoop her up and carry her to their bedroom.
Chris made sure to be quiet as he carried her to the bed where he set her down gently. At this point, Nina knew that Chris wouldn't take no for an answer and she let him take her shoes off before grabbing the waistband of her pants and pulled them off her legs so that she would be more comfortable. He tucked her underneath the blankets before pressing a sweet kiss to her forehead.
"My precious Nina, just relax and go to sleep," He smiled at her sweet face.
She didn't have any more protests in her, because my the time he stood to his feet, her exhausted body succumbed to sleep. Chris smiled to himself, making sure Nina was tucked in before going over to look in the crib. Jack's tiny body was still except for his stomach that rose and fall with his soft breathing as he slept.
Chris couldn't help but reach in and gently touch the baby soft hair on his head and softly said, "I love you Jack. I'll love you forever and I'll always be here for you, I promise."
He leaned down and kissed his sleeping face before he kicked off his shoes and then climbed into bed himself. Chris laid his head on the pillow and just stared at Nina fast asleep next to him. He noticed her long eyelashes resting against her soft cheeks that were still a little red from how much she had been crying from her sheer happiness and he smiled at the sight. Sometimes he couldn't quite figure out how he got so lucky and in this moment, laying in this bedroom with his sleeping wife and baby, was one of those moments.
While Nina slept soundly, he did the same thing he had done to Jack and leaned over to kiss her while she was sleeping and then told her, "I love you so much Nina.... I'm going to love you every single day of my life. I promise you that, and that is one promise I know I can keep."
