Car Accident

A thousand questions filled Chris' mind when he pulled into the driveway and saw the front bumper of the car crunched. Instantly his mind went to Nina and wondered if she was alright. His phone had died at work and the thought of her being in an accident and not being able to get a hold of him was too much for him to handle and he ran into the house at top speed.

"Nina! Babe, are you alright?" He called out once he whipped the door open. "What happened?"

Chris stopped short when he got into the living room and he found his family. Nina was saying something to Logan and had her hands on his shoulders while the other kids were gathered around. When they saw their father enter the room, Nina said, "Why don't you guys all go work on your homework."

He watched at the kids filed up to their rooms, with Sophie stopping off to hug her dad, before he was left with just his wife and a very upset looking Logan. Chris studied their faces, wondering what had gone on but Nina tried to fill in the blanks for him.

"Honey, you need to tell your dad what happened," Nina rested a hand on Logan's shoulder.

The sixteen year old sighed, not wanting to face Chris. He kept staring down at his feet but when Nina squeezed his shoulder gently, he confessed, "I got in a... small car accident."

"Are you okay?" Chris instantly was concerned.

Logan reached up and scratched at his brown curls and nodded, "Yeah I'm fine."

"So how did it happen?" He wondered while he took his gun belt off and unbuttoned the top couple buttons of his uniform.

Nina tensed when Chris asked the question. She knew it had to come out and Logan would have to confess but Nina knew Chris would be angry. The kind hearted man was calm and fair, normally very slow to anger but when he did get angry... he got very angry. There were certain things that set him off and Nina knew this would be one of them.

"Well... I um.... I was texting and I didn't see the car in front of me," Logan quickly spit out.

"YOU WHAT?"

Logan cringed when he heard his father's deep voice boom and he knew he was in for it. He knew he deserved it but he still didn't like it and knew that it was bad news when his father started pacing back and forth on the carpet. Nina stood next to her son and kept her hand on his shoulder while she saw Chris' face getting red and his nostrils flare.

"I can't believe you were fucking texting while driving! You know better than that!" Chris stopped to turn and shout. "I cannot believe you broke the law!"

Logan gulped while he muttered, "I-I'm sorry, Dad."

"Damn right you should be sorry!" Chris took a step closer to him and towered over the teenager. "I cannot believe you did this. You crashed the car for what? A dumb text."

"I didn't mean to," Tears welled in his eyes while he looked up at his angry father.

"No shit," Chris crossed his thick arms in front of his firm chest. "I thought you were more responsible than this. I'm a police Sergeant for god's sakes Logan! Do you have ANY idea what I've seen from people texting while driving. People get killed Logan. Killed. You could have killed yourself or someone else because you were being so damn stupid!"

"Christopher," Nina's voice interrupted, calling him by his full name which got his attention before she firmly told him, "That's enough."

Hearing the simple command stated so firmly made both Logan and Chris silence. It was rare when her tone was anything but gentle and it let Chris know he had gone too far. Even though it made him stop, it didn't dissipate his anger and he still was fuming.

"Logan, why don't you go start on your homework," She said, coming her fingers through his soft hair and offered him a reassuring smile.

He nodded and quickly hurried around his father, scurrying up the stairs and closed his bedroom door behind him. Once Nina heard the click of the door, she led Chris up to their own room before closing the door tight behind them. She barely had time to turn around when Chris' voice boomed, "I cannot believe he fucking broke the law. Something really horrible could have happened!"

Sarge had happily been snoring on the bed, but hearing his master's upset voice made his head lift up and he looked around the room for any danger. Nina walked over and sat down on the bed, stroking Sarge's fur to calm him while Chris kept pacing back and forth, ranting about the danger, irresponsibility, what could possibly have been doing through his head, where they went wrong, and how they should punish him.

"He is getting his license taken away, that's for damn sure. No phone for the next year and he's grounded until Christmas at least," Chris huffed.

Nina didn't say a word until his rant was over and he had got some of it out of his system. When he finally had stopped, Chris looked over and let his blue eyes rest on her. Nina motioned for him to come over and he silently obliged.

She scooted Sarge over to make room for her hunky husband and Nina rested her back up against the headboard and patted her lap. Chris laid down on the bed and rested his head in Nina's lap, looking up at her while she ran a hand through his short hair.

"I know you're upset," She cooed while gazing down at him. "I get it. I am too, but Logan knows he screwed up."

"I know," Chris sighed as he rubbed a hand on his forehead, knowing that sometimes he could come down a little too hard on his sons. "It's just... Nina... I've been at some of those car accidents and I've seen what can happen. I guess I just was scared thinking that could have been him... and it made me angry to think of him not taking that seriously."

Nina nodded while she kept raking her hand through his hair to relax him, "I understand that and I feel the same way and we'll talk to him. But let's cool off first."

Chris took Nina's free hand, bringing it to his mouth and pressed a kiss in the palm of her hand. She smiled sweetly at him as he tangled his fingers in hers and wondered aloud, "Nothing ever rattles you. I wish I could always keep my cool and handle things like you do."

"Well we're a perfect match, because the things that I get emotional and freak out over, you're calm with. Then the things that you get angry over, I'm calm about so see? We're a good match," She grinned, leaning down and kissing his lips sweetly.

"I'd agree with that," His eyes crinkled up with a big warm smile. "I'm still pissed at Logan though."

His words made Nina laugh but then almost as if on cue, a soft knock echoed on the door. Nina told the unknown person to come in and a very sheepish Logan appeared. He closed the door behind him while Chris pushed his hunky body up and sat next to his wife on the bed.

They watched as Logan shuffled his sock covered feet until he reached the end of the bed. His hands were shoved in the pockets of his jeans while he chewed nervously on his bottom lip the exact same way Nina did. The parents waited for him to start talking and Logan's words began to gush out all at once.

"I'm really really sorry about the car and about being on my phone. I promise I'll work really hard to pay for everything on the car," He said in one big breath.

Nina looked at Chris to see if his anger had faded but saw his strong jawline still set as he nodded at their son. Logan realized this and so he turned around to shuffle out of the room but before he made it, Logan rested his hand on the doorknob and turned his head back to look at Chris, "And Dad..."

"Yeah?"

"I'm really sorry I disappointed you."

Those words went straight to his heart and in an instant, Chris was up off the bed and had his hunky arms around Logan while he hugged him tight. Logan let out a few tears while Chris squeezed him, "I love you Logan. Don't worry about the car bud, we'll take care of it. All that matters is that you're okay."

"I love you dad."

"I love you too."
