Nina knew something was off. After being married to Chris for so long, she could read him like a book. Ever since he got home from work, his body language was stiff and he just wasn't acting like himself. He seemed distant and withdrawn and Nina's suspicions were only confirmed when he dug some cash out of his pocket around dinnertime and gave it to Jack, asking him if he'd take his siblings out for pizza.

Once all the kids were out the door, Chris slowly walked over to where Nina was curled up on the couch. Sarge was laying next to her, fast asleep with Fluffy right on top of him. Nina stroked the dog's soft fur as Chris sat down on the coffee table so that he was facing her. She knew he was about to talk about what was bothering him so she just patiently waited.

A long sigh came out of him as he leaned his elbows on his knees and looked into his wife's eyes while starting with, "I need to talk to you, babe."

"Is everything okay?" She reached out, holding one of his big hands in hers.

"Yeah I just..." He used his free hand to run through his short brown hair. "Next week, I have to leave to go on an undercover drug bust and they're taking a few of the Sergeants who have had more street experience."

"How long will you be gone?" She wondered.

Chris' voice was low as he said, "Probably about a week and well honey.... I don't... I don't... oh god, I don't know how to say this."

Nina tensed up a little, seeing how upset he was as he rubbed a hand on his forehead. She prodded him with, "What is it?"

"We're always honest with each other, and I don't want to worry you baby, but I want to be honest with you..." His earnest blue eyes stared right into hers. "And this is going to be kind of dangerous. I'm sure I'm going to be just fine, but I just want to be really honest with you about it."

Panic struck in Nina's heart but she stuffed it down, not wanting to add to Chris' stress and just nodded, "Okay," Before she pushed herself up and kissed the top of his head. She walked into the kitchen and focused on making herself a cup of coffee to preoccupy her mind while Chris stayed sitting where he was as he thought everything over.

It wasn't long until Chris got pulled out of his thoughts when he heard the sound of something shattering. In an instant, he was on his feet and in the kitchen where he found the scene. Bits of the shattered white mug were spread across the floor along with the puddle of coffee that had been inside. Nina sat crumpled on the floor, leaning against the cabinet as she cried with her face in her hands.

Chris carefully but quickly crossed the kitchen floor, avoiding the shattered mug so that he could wrap an arm around Nina's back and hook the other one under her legs. He effortlessly picked her up and made a beeline up the stairs to their bedroom so that he could sit down on their bed and cradle her against his chest.

Nina wrapped her arms around his neck and buried her face into his chest while she violently sobbed. It broke Chris' heart to hear his precious Nina cry this way but he knew there was nothing he could do other than comfort her. He stroked her hair while he gently whispered, "Shhh, baby, it's okay. I'm here, I'm right here."

"Chris.... I'm scared," She whimpered while nuzzling her face into his neck.

"I know baby," Chris let out a long sigh while his big hands rubbed over her back. "I know. But it'll be alright. I'm going to be with a whole team who are highly trained and we're going to be just fine."

Nina lifted her red face, her bottom lip trembling which caused Chris' heart to crumble before she admitted, "I'm sorry Chris, I don't mean to upset you. I know I'm being ridiculous and-"

Before she could go on, he cut her off by kissing her sweetly, the taste of her salty tears mixing in. When he pulled away from her, Chris cupped her face in his big hands and told her, "What do I always tell you? Don't you ever dismiss your feelings. What you feel is important Nina and I want you to tell me what you're feeling."

She studied every inch of his handsome face while keeping one arm around his neck and the other played with the short pieces of his hair. Eventually Nina started to explain, "I just... I'm so proud of you and all you do as a police officer. I don't think I could be more proud... but I do worry about you but I guess I just sort of block it out. I try not to think about it a lot and you always assure me that you're fine and I guess to hear you acknowledge the danger just... well, it just scares me."

He intently listened as her tears started flowing again, "I just can't think about you ever not coming home, I don't know what I'd do without you."

"Hey," Chris' voice was firm as he looked straight into her eyes. "Nina, I am always going to home to you."

She closed her eyes as he pressed sweet and gentle kisses all over her face, whispering over and over again how much he loved her. Nina drunk in the words like they were her oxygen and she relished being in his arms. No matter what was going on or what she was feeling, Nina always felt like everything would be alright as long as she was in his arms.

"Promise me," She breathed. "Promise me you'll come home to me."

"I do promise you, Nina," He told her as his arms locked around her back and he moved his lips along her jaw. "I love you so much."

"I love you too," Nina whispered through her tears. "I adore you, Chris. I need you."

Chris held her so tight against his chest it was hard for her to breathe but she didn't care. She needed to be in his arms. Nina clung to his soft tee shirt as she tried to breathe deeply. Chris took his time stroking her soft wavy hair until her breathing had calmed down. He then put both his hands on her cheeks and looked into her eyes while assuring her, "Hey... you're not ever getting rid of me... Deal?"

Finally he caught a glimpse of her beautiful smile before she told him, "Deal."
