Chapter 5

"MOMMY! AUNTIE NINA! THEY'RE HERE! THEY'RE HERE!" Noah bounced up and down as he heard a knock on the door in the apartment.

"Go open the door then sweetie," Katie told her son from where she stood stirring the pot on the stove.

"I'll go with you," Nina hurried to pull off her apron and walked behind Noah.

She quickly tried to smooth down her simple striped top tucked into her high waisted black jeans. Nina had tried to put together something a little bit cuter than her normal cozy big sweater and had spent more time on her hair, making her short waves soft and shiny. She had just tucked a piece of hair behind her ear when Noah opened the door with his little hands and was instantly scooped up in Chris' big arms.

"Noah!" The men both shouted, enthusiastically greeting him.

"Where's your uniform?" He asked Chris, noticing that he was in a black tee shirt and jeans and Jake had on a similar outfit.

Jake laughed and told him, "We don't wear them if we're not on duty, bud."

"I see you're wearing your uniform though," Chris smiled, putting Noah back on the ground and then kneeling on carpet so he could be eye level with the little boy and noticed his costume.

"I have my badge too!" Noah proudly showed him the plastic badge Chris had gifted him.

Katie walked out of the kitchen and told the men, "He hasn't taken it off since you gave it to him."

"I'm glad he likes it," Chris smiled before holding his hand out, "I'm Chris by the way."

"I'm Katie. I'm Noah's mom and Nina's older sister," She explained before greeting Jake.

Nina took their coats, before leading them through the apartment and to the table. Dinner was ready just in time and Nina served everyone before they all ate and chatted happily through the meal. The men both intently listened while Noah told them about all of the Halloween's he had been a police officer and Jake enjoyed telling the little boy his favorite jokes that made Noah laugh and Chris roll his eyes.

They had all finished their meal right as the door opened and they noticed a very beautiful dark brunette come in, babbling about some random thing until she noticed everyone at the table.

"Sarah, what are you doing here?" Nina wasn't too happy about her little sister barging in.

"I do live here you know," Sarah laughed through her teasing, "Remember, we're roommates?"

"I thought you had a date?" Katie questioned.

Sarah just waved her hand and rolled her eyes while telling them, "Oh he was so boring, I bailed early and I'm so glad I did. The view here is so much better..." The spunky and flirty girl trailed off while holding out her hand to Jake to introduce herself and then did the same to Chris.

"Why don't you join us," Jake asked.

"Oh I'd love to," Sarah smiled before taking a seat next to him.

Nina stood up and collected everyone's plate, catching Chris' eyes for a moment and he gave her a sympathetic look, instantly understanding what she was feeling. She smiled at him softly before telling Noah, "Why don't you give Jake and Chris the pictures you drew them while we get dessert."

Noah enthusiastically grabbed the drawings he made for them and began to show the men while the sisters all went into the kitchen. The second the door was closed, Sarah stated, "Okay I call dibs on the blonde!"

"Sarah," Nina groaned.

"What, you don't like him do you?" She asked, taking the dishes from her sister and putting them in the sink.

Katie pulled out the dessert plates and started slicing up the cake while plainly answering, "No, Chris is the one she likes."

"What?" Nina's head whipped over to look at her. "No I don't!"

Both of the sisters laughed while Nina kept arguing, "I don't! They're just both my friends."

"Nina, c'mon, it's okay. It's obvious you like him. I see the way you smile at him," Katie put a piece of cake on each plate.

Sarah pulled the ice cream out of the fridge as she added, "Oh and she talks about him all the time."

A loud groan came out of the middle sister while she closed the utensil drawer a little too forcefully, "I don't!"

"Just admit it," Katie laughed while Nina shook her head.

Sarah put down the ice cream and leaned against the counter, crossing her arms in front of her chest while smirking, "Admit it, or I'll tell Chris about the time that you got talked into going streaking!"

Nina's eyes grew wide while she gasped, "No! You wouldn't!"

"You know I would!" Sarah laughed.

Nina knew she was stuck. Being the middle child seemed to always put her in this place and so she knew she didn't have a choice. She groaned before walking over to the two women and admitted, "Okay, I like him, are you happy now?"

Sarah nodded before Katie spoke, "He seems like such a good guy. And he is quite a looker, isn't he?"

"He's gorgeous," Nina's voice got all dreamy as she finally broke down and told her sisters everything as she always ended up doing. "He has the most beautiful smile, and his scruff is so sexy, and oh my goodness, he has the cutest butt."

The girls all laughed before Sarah told her, "Well I've only been here like 5 minutes and I can see he likes you. I saw his little puppy dog look when he looked at you."

Nina just shook her head while putting a fork on each plate, "No, he doesn't like me. That I do know. Why would he though, I mean he's practically Prince Charming."

"He does like you, you just need to let him know how you feel about him. Give the poor man something to work with!" Sarah told her sister and Katie agreed.

Nina picked up two of the plates, brushing off her sister's comment and told her they just were friends and that's all they were, before going back to the dining room. Sarah and Katie both knew their sister, how she always had worked so hard and had often been in the shadows, feeling like a failure and that she wasn't anything special. They both wanted her to be happy and thought she maybe needed a little push.

They both went back out to the table and all sat down as they ate their dessert and kept chatting. Soon Noah asked his mother if he could go and play in the living room. Katie told him he could but as he was hurrying down from his chair and out of the room, he knocked his fork off the table.

Nina stood to get it but Chris told her to sit down as he would be happy to get it. He took a few steps and bent over to get the fork and Sarah, being the mischievous girl she was, saw this as her opportunity to nudge her sister's crush along.

"You're right Nina," Sarah began, taking a bite of her cake while Chris came over to sit back down. "Chris does have a really cute butt."

Nina had been taking a drink of her water but when she heard what her sister said, she immediately started choking on it. As Nina's cheeks burned red while she coughed loudly, Jake, Katie and Sarah all laughed while Chris brough his hand up and rested his thumb on his stubbled cheek and his fingers covered his mouth to try to hide his smile full of amusement.

"It's okay Nina," Jake began when Nina finally got her coughing under control. "Don't be embarrassed, Chris checks your ass out all the time."

Now it was Chris' turn to blush deep red and Nina was having a hard time deciding what she was more mortified about. The fact Chris knew she thought he had a cute butt or the fact he had checked out hers. Everyone laughed when they saw both Nina and Chris as red as tomatoes.

Neither knew what to say to each other and they just tried to pretend that it didn't happen. The rest of the evening ending up being full of laughter and fun, all of them getting along and enjoying each other but every once in a while, Nina would catch Chris' gaze or vice versa and they instantly would drop their eye contact feeling awkward with the unspoken truth that laid between them.
