It was colder than usual on the early Tuesday morning. The sun hadn't rose yet and now that it was December in Seattle, the weather had turned much colder. One way that Nina noticed this was that when Sarge came trotting into the coffee shop in front of Jake and Chris, he had a police vest on to keep him warm.
"There's my favorite boy!" Nina beamed while coming from behind the counter and kneeling down to rub behind the German Shepherd's ears before giving him a treat.
"Wow, and here I was thinking I was your favorite!" Jake complained. "Just for that, I'm not telling you my joke for today."
"Oh thank goodness," Nina playfully teasing, making Chris laugh while Jake feigned hurt.
The two men hugged Nina before going to their table with their usual coffee's all ready for them and their daily napkin sketch she drew for each one. Chris' today was a sketch of him and Sarge. It was very detailed and beautiful, making Chris' blue eyes sparkle, "Nina, this is amazing! You really are a talented artist."
"I don't think doodles constitute being an artist," Nina deflected while she pulled up a chair and Sarge sat at her feet as per usual.
His low voice vibrated, "Well I love your drawings."
She lowered her gaze as Nina tried to hide her wide smile before Jake interrupted, "Okay stop flirting and tell Nina your news!"
Nina turned her head to look at Chris, tucking a piece of caramel colored hair behind her ear while asking, "What's your news, Chris?"
"Well," He started, scratching at his stubbled strong jawline. "I bought a house."
"Did you really? That's amazing!" She beamed. "Where is it? And when are you moving in?"
"It's in Kirkland and actually I'm moving in tomorrow. This all has happened really quickly but the lease for my apartment is up at the end of the month but I'd like to be moved into my house before Christmas and all. I really don't have very much stuff so it shouldn't be too hard to move in. Since tomorrow is my day off I'm going to try to get it mostly done tomorrow," Chris explained.
Jake then jumped in, "Yeah me and some of the other officers are going to help him move tomorrow."
"Well my shift is over at 11, I'd love to come help if you need it," Nina sweetly offered.
Chris protested at first, not wanting to inconvenience her in any way but Jake intervened in the conversation which resulted in Nina meeting them at Chris' new home the following day around noon. She parked her car in the quaint suburban neighborhood before walking up to the house that she saw a truck in the driveway while men carried furniture into the home.
She picked up the plate she brought and walked up the sidewalk that was surrounded by grass frozen from the cold. Nina liked the house from looking at the outside. It was a warm grey color with a small little porch in the front. It was a home small enough to be cozy but not so small that it was claustrophobic.
When Nina stepped inside, there were stairs leading up and a living room to the left that already had a TV and a couch but not much else. She heard voices so Nina walked deeper into the home and into the kitchen where the source of most of the voices were.
She saw four or so people standing around talking but her eyes instantly went to the man who had his back to her. Nina instantly recognized his short brown hair, broad shoulders and muscular arms. He must have seen the other people looking behind him because he turned around and instantly his face lit up.
"Nina," His low voice made her knees feel like jello.
"Hi," She smiled widely before holding up a plate covered in plastic wrap, "I brought some sandwiches. I figured everyone might be hungry."
