Malar entered the attic and went to her usual corner. She sat down hugging her knees. Although it was not the best place to be in, it became Malar's safe space where she could be all on her own. The past few months had been really tough for Malar. Anbukarasi, Eswari and Pownu had been taunting her for not conceiving despite them arranging for Vetri and Malar's first night. They kept reminding her that she had only three months left before she would be sent home if she fails to conceive.

Paada vendum (Sing my song)

Kaalidaasan kaana vendum (As the epic poet rejoices in our tale of love)

Vaanavil varum vaazhvil meedum (Rainbows come waltzing back into my life)

Malar recalled all her happy moments with Vetri. He was definitely a blessing in her life. When Vetri married her, she did not expect that she would accept him as her husband ever. In fact, Malar hated Vetri. But over the year, Vetri's care and concern had changed her mind and even before she knew it, Malar was in love with him. However, after finding out about Vetri and Anjali's love matter, Malar was taken aback. Even though, she had also loved someone else, the thought of Vetri once being in love with someone else was definitely painful. To add on to that, Vetri had only told her about this after initially lying that he had never loved anyone. This had made Malar move one step back.

Naanum neeyum kaalam ezhuthi (You and I are time's absurd play)

Kaatril veesiya naadagam (Who have been tossed astray into the winds)

Andha kaatrae meendum inaithu (Those winds now bind us)

Arangam yettrum kaaviyam (A saga for the world to see)

Dheva mullai pookum kollai (Divine jasmine buds, adorning the lord)

Kondathe en veettin ellai (Have found their way to my own yard)

Ennai nee maravathiru (Never forget me)

Puyal kaatrilum piriyathiru (Never forsake me, come calm or storm)

When Anbukarasi had told her that she was arranging for Vetri and Malar's first night, Malar was shocked. A few weeks before that, Malar had actually decided to start her life with Vetri. However, after the entire Anjali issue, Malar needed time to throw everything aside and move on. However, even before she was mentally ready, her mother in law had made the arrangements. That night, Malar had been hesistant and even though Vetri seemed like he was interested, he had later told her that he would never do something that Malar was not keen of. The only reason why Vetri had agreed to such an arrangement was to prevent further pressure from his mother and sister. The two of them decided to act as if everything was alright. However, little did Malar expect that her mother in law would keep taunting her even after that. Now things got worse and her mother in law kept threatening to send her home. Malar could not imagine being apart from Vetri.

Malar takes out the photoframe which contained Vetri's drawing which she had hidden in the attic. She had completed drawing his eyes almost 6 months ago but due to certain circumstances, she never gave this to him. Instead, this picture became her confidante. There were certain things that Malar could not say to Vetri directly so whenever she would feel like it, Malar would come to the attic and pick up this photoframe. She would then speak to it.

Thumbai pola thooya azhagai (Delicate white blossoms, pure and true)

Unnidam thaan kaangiraen (That is the beauty I see in you)

En kai neeti yendhi anaikkum (Your hand in mine, forever entwined)

Naalai yenni yenginen (That is the day I long for, my love)

Intha vaarthai ketkumbothu (These words from you, I have longed to hear)

Eeram oorum kannin meethu (And to my eyes, they bring a tear)

Paavaiyin intha eeram thaan (Is it the maiden's tears)

Karumegamaai ooruvanatho (That come down as dark thunderclouds)

Malar looks at the photoframe and speaks.

Malar: I don't know why life keeps throwing such challenges to me. Today, Athai just reminded me that I have less than three months to conceive. If not she says that I will have to go home. I cannot imagine going away from your life. You know I love you Mama. Eventually some day I want to lead a life with you. I want to have a happy family with our children. But right now, more than anything I am afraid. From one side, Athai, Eswari Anni and Pownu have been pressurizing me. To add on to that, Anjali and Alagar have been torturing me by telling me negative things about you. I can clearly understand their intention to separate us and even though I know that you are a gem, I'm afraid that someday I might make hasty decisions and hurt you. I don't want to start our life with such a fear Mama. I just don't know what to do.

Tears begin to roll down Malar's cheeks.

Kaanal aagumo kaarigai kanavu (Will the maiden's dream forever remain a mirage)

Dhaagam theerkummo kodaiyin nilavu (Will the summer moon quench her longing)

Tholaivilae velicham (The ray of light seems distant)

Thanimaiyil urugum anicham (The flower remains lonely)

Kanavu thaan ithuvum (Is this just a dream)

Kalainthidum enna nenjil nenjil thinam varuthe acham (A fear grips the heart as each day dawns)

Malar keeps crying when she hears a voice.

Vetri: Did you think I will let you go this easily?

Malar looks at the frame in her hand and notices Vetri's reflection. She turns around to see Vetri standing behind her.

She stands up and Vetri continues talking.

Vetri: Malar, no one can separate you and I. Not Alagar and Anjali. Not even my mother or sister. Starting a family is our decision and like I said, even if the world goes against us, I will stand by you. I totally understand whatever that is in your mind and I promise that only when you are truly happy and ready, we will start our lives. No pressure on you.

Malar moves forward and hugs Vetri. Her head rests on Vetri's chest and she continues to cry. After a while, when she calms down,

Vetri: Now, when will you give me my birthday gift? 6 months is a long wait.

Malar looks up to see Vetri smiling.

Vetri: I can't wait to you to gift it to me. I have even cleared out a space for the frame to be hung in our room.

Malar smiles.
