J U L I A N
I tossed and turned on my bed because something was interrupting my sleep and I have no idea what it is.
It sounds like an alarming sound. I moved my hand around and hoped to find the source of this horrible noise.
My hand hit a vibrating object on the top of my drawer. I immediately slapped it away and the noise stopped. I went back off to my perfect place.
Wait, alarming noise, Vibrating object, my drawer top. Shit, that was my alarm. I sat up and looked around but everything was pitch dark.
Am I dead? Why is everything black? Am I blind.
Arhh, I'm blind. I looked around for a torch or something. My eyes they're... What's this? I brought my hands up to my face and felt a fluffy thing on my face.
Oh, my sleep mask is still on. I pulled it off my face and picked up my alarm. It's not broken, thank God.
Why do I feel like today is a really important day? I yawned and looked around. My eye caught sight of my small calendar. I saw a date circled in red.
I rushed over to it and looked at it.
14th of July, 2020
My graduation.
Graduation? GRADUATION.
HOLY MOLY, TODAY IS MY FREAKING GRADUATION.
I ran as fast as I could into the bathroom and worked my magic. I looked at my watch as I hopped my way to the auditorium. I'm not that late, only thirty minutes late.
Let's hope that they haven't gotten too far. Ugh, this stilettos are killing my feet. I saw my friends sitting in front and quietly slipped through the prying eyes of the crowd.
"Where we you? You do realize that you could have missed your name" Darcey whispered
"I over slept, now shut up. I'm here, aren't I?" I said
"This my students is The outgoing class of 2020" Principal Mason said
We stood up and formed a line ascending in alphabetical order.
"Allen Avery" The graduation committee put her gown around her and placed her hat on her head.
After what seemed like hours, he finally got to my name. Wait, sorry that's Jace.
"Reece Jace"
"Reece Julian" He finally called out my name. I walked up to the committee and put on my gown and hat then I collected my scroll from him.
I flashed a million dollar smile before going back to my seat. Principal Mason excused himself and we had to go on a break. I was walking down the Halls of our school when he came up to me.
"Principal Mason? Am I in trouble or something?" I asked
"No but on a scale of one to ten, how fast can you come up with a valedictory speech?" He asked
"Huh? Me? But I'm not the valedictorian?" I said
"Technically, a valedictorian is someone who gets the highest score in the finals and that is if I'm not wrong, you" He pointed at me
"I thought we use a different style in this school?"
"Yes, because it causes unnecessary competition between students. We randomly pick a student from the graduating class. Nirvana was supposed to give the speech but she just got out of the operating room" He said
"I mean, I don't even have a book on me or...." I panicked
"Just calm down, I believe in you" He rubbed my shoulder and walked away.
Wow, 'How comforting his words are' How the hell am I supposed to prepare a speech that people spend an entire semester prepping for? I feel like the world hates me and is always playing pranks on me.
"Now, please welcome The Class of 2020's Valedictorian" Everyone clapped
I took a deep breath and walked on stage. When I was little, I used to imagine that I was all grown up when facing an audience and everyone else was a little kid but what no one knows is that when things get tough, I still do.
Julian, don't think of this as a speech. You need to think of this as an adult talking to kids. Someone who wants to leave a mark.
"What is high school?" I looked at the paper in front of me which was filled with so much vocabulary I'm not even sure I can pronounce. I picked up the paper and crumbled it. I tossed it into the trash can.
"For some people, it's a place to learn and acquire a lot of things. At first, I thought it was just a hell hole where you're basically forced to learn. I always felt like teachers think they have it easier than us students. I mean, they get paid to teach in this dump but we are held captive and forced to learn against our own will. But High school is so much more than that, it is a place for you to really explore yourself. Get to know more about your sexuality, your type and who you truly are. It's a place for you to discover yourself and learn a lot from yourself. It's the place where most lose their virginity. It's a place where people fall in love, get hurt and fall in love all over again. So whether you're a nerd at the corner of the classroom or a loud cheerleader, it doesn't matter who you are. What matters is that you make every moment count because high school is a once in a lifetime opportunity and we've come to the end of this car ride. So to all the juniors here, mess around, pass your tests, fall in love but whatever you do, have fun because you only experience high school once in a lifetime. Thank you"
The crowd burst out cheering and roaring like tigers.
"That's my sister, THAT'S MY DAMN SISTER" Jace yelled at the top of his voice.
Well damn son, I may not have prepared all semester but I still managed to finish high school just the way I like it.
The Reece Way.
