The skies were dark today, casting shadows over the windows and letting the dark flood through the rooms. Rain pounded on the windows, and thunder rumbled distantly.
Peter was perfectly content where he was.
You see, Peter was currently asleep. He was tucked into a corner of the couch in the Avengers Compound living room, dressed in his school clothes with a blanket curled lazily over his limbs.
The fireplace flickered across the room, orange flames popping and crackling in their little contained box. It contrasted starkly against the darkness of the room.
It was not the kind of darkness that swallowed you whole like a wolf in a fairytale, but such as the kind of darkness which envelopes you in a loving hug that keeps you safe.
That is how Peter felt, cozy and safe, tucked in the corner of the couch as he dozed off.
Tony wanders into the room in search of the kid, but when he sees Peter, his hair ruffled and his cheek pressed uncomfortably into the couch in the way unplanned naps usually had one do, he slowly exited the living room and returned back to his lab.
He remains asleep.
A few moments later, Steve trails into the room in search of something to do. He was originally planning on commandeering the television, maybe putting on a black and white horror movie in celebration of the season.
But instead, he finds a child, peacefully resting in the coziness of an October storm.
He smiles faintly, and then leaves the living room, and the television remote, exactly as they were.
The next person to walk in is Wanda. She walked past the living room, twirling red energy around her fingers delicately, on her way to the kitchen. She sees how dark the room is, and she's about to turn the light switch, but she sees a figure sleeping on the couch.
Upon closer inspection, she can tell that the figure is Peter. The corner of her mouth turns up, and she brings her hand away from the switch. Perhaps the light can stay off.
She continues her way into the kitchen. An hour later, and the entire floor of the Compound begins to smell like one of her traditional hungarian desserts.
As the storm continues, so does Peter's dreaming.
The last person to walk into the living room was Thor, believe it or not.
He had been visiting, which he does on occasion when he isn't off with the newly introduced Guardians of the Galaxy. His long hair is tied up into a bun, and he's lost some weight since the last time everyone had seen him.
He's fairly gruff as he walks into the room, making noise as his heavy boots clunk against the floor. The noise thankfully blends in easily with the storm, so Peter doesn't stir.
Thor looks around the room with little familiarity in his eyes. His gaze falls on Peter, and his eyebrows raise.
"He's asleep," Bruce says softly from the doorway. "Tony told us all to be quiet if we came in."
"Ah," Thor says, loud at first, but then quieting down. "I understand."
Thor walks out with Bruce into the dining room, where they converse amongst themselves for a hearty hour.
Peter wakes up from his nap, and the skies are still dark. He's comfortable, just yawning up at the dark ceiling. He isn't sure what time it is, but there's no stress about it.
He stretches out on the couch, and then gets up. His limbs are lethargic from sleep, but he feels well rested and comfortable.
It's well into the afternoon, but Peter trails into the kitchen with another sleepy yawn.
"Hey, kid." Tony greets. "Sleep well?"
Peter nods and sits up on the counter. "Did I miss anything?"
"Nope. Everything's calm around here. Wanda made pastries," Tony gestures to a plate.
"Yum."
"You're clearly not sleeping tonight," Tony laughs. "Want to tinker with some suit stuff in the lab?"
Peter takes a moment and then nods. "Yeah. That sounds good," he smiles.
It's the quiet moments in between chaos that keep them steady.
These quiet moments come in many forms, but a good prime example is just a simple nap on a stormy day, where everything is settled inside and everything is stormy outside.
A simple afternoon where relaxation is welcomed by all, either by communication or some subconscious understanding. A simple afternoon of peace, for just a moment.
Everything will be calm.
Everything will be okay.
