LOCKED AWAY
♫ no one's here to sleep — naughty boy ft. bastille
BEING HERSELF AGAIN after being held hostage to her own body for so long, Aspen felt like she was going clinically insane. She wasn't used to controlling her own mind or her own actions, it was like she'd forgotten how to do it. She'd gone mad.Having moved back in with the McCall's, she laid on her bed that has been so unslept in for months, her motionless body on top of the covers, as her eyes stared up at the blank ceiling. She'd even find herself forgetting to blink, making her eyes water as tears trickled down the side of her face—she didn't know if they were reflex tears or emotional ones. Most likely both.
She thought for a little while that maybe she could do this. Maybe they'd find a way to save her and Stiles, and she'd be able to get herself back to the person she once was before all of this. But then she started to wonder, when was the last time she'd really felt normal?
It definitely dated back to before she left town, the weeks leading up to that were tainted with pain and torture as well. The last time she'd really felt normal—would have to be the day before she turned seventeen.
That was four months ago. The end of summer.
Her, Scott and Stiles had just had the best summer of their lives, they went on road trips together, they'd sit on hills and watch the sunset like peaceful people. They went to parties, even those of people they didn't know. Her and Stiles had never been happier, they weren't able to look at each other without feeling butterflies in their stomachs, and smitten grins would smear all over their lips.
Ever since the night of her seventeenth birthday, everything just continued to go down-hill. And she didn't see the light coming any time soon.
As she laid awake, her body completely still and unmoving, Aspen finally accepted that maybe she'd never be normal again.
Maybe she wasn't going to get the life she'd always wanted for herself.
In some alternate reality where her life wasn't so fucked up, she saw herself getting out of this town. She saw herself following her life-long dream of becoming a published author one day, with all of her friends and loved ones by her side. She saw herself marrying the love of her life and the two of them living happily ever after, possibly even starting a family.
It was the simple life that she'd always wanted.
Now, she was starting to accept she wasn't going to get that life. Instead, she was cursed and bound to this town like it was a cage, like she was thrown in it and someone else tossed the key away.
She didn't even know if she was going to make it out of this alive.
Eventually, Aspen closed her eyes. She tried to think about something peaceful, something that would bring her happiness—she pictured Stiles.
