The two boys sat together on the cold table. Zim sat on Dib's left as Dib was turned slightly to let his feet rest on the table. The lab was dark full of strange lab experiments, gadgets and empty life sized cloning tubes.

The giant computer with it's large screen was dark, but noticeable in the unlit room. Dib couldn't see much as his eyes were still trying adjust, but he could see the crimson red eyes of Zim staring aback at him and reflecting his image in them.

Zim looks uncertain and troubled and he looks away, "Zim... would be okay with just enslaving your race instead of destroying it..." Zim whispered softly as Dib sighed.

Their hands were firmly grasping each other refusing to let go. Dib looks up at Zim, who couldn't look at him as he's too vulnerable and embarrassed right now.

"Zim... I know I'm not an Irken or even your tallest, but do you think you could find peace with my approval." Dib asked him shyly.

Zim looks at him in shock and completely vulnerable expression across his face, "I can say... There's no one quite like you Zim. You're stubborn, crazy, amazing, and just... well... I'm glad I'm your my rival and I hope... now we can be friends. As I'd like to get to know you better." Dib explained softly.

Zim stared at him in awe not sure how to take all of that, "Of course... I guess I'm going to be that preachy friend that keeps you out of trouble." Dib laughed shyly, "Is that okay? I'll teach you all you want about earth." Dib offered.

"It can be... your home away from home." Dib smiled, "You can be part of my family." Dib tells him softly, "What I'm saying is... I don't hate you as much as I did before either. I find that... I can tolerate you rather well." Dib explained.

Zim looked into the soft brown eyes of his human rival and felt tears wanting to come from his own eyes. He wanted to scream out yes and hug him and just forget everything. He's an invader though. Zim slowly pulls his hand away from Dib, who looks at him sadly.

Maybe Zim was scared he'd destroy this too, "You destroy everything you touch." The tallests voice echo in his head.

Not this time. He won't ever let anything hurt Dib. He hated to admit it. Zim hated these feelings, but Dib had become something precious to Zim just like Gir.

"Family..." the word called to Zim's heart and made him want to claw his insides out.

He wanted to have that though as he slid off the table as Dib called out to him in confusion.

"Zim?" Dib asked.

"Zim can't accept that. Zim just can't." Zim held back tears and storms off using his pack to climb out of his lab.

"ZIM!" Dib cried out and reached for him and sighed.

Dib was left alone to ponder where he went wrong. Perhaps it's just to much to ask for? Perhaps Zim's having a hard time swapping from enemies to friends just like Dib is. Why did he think he could be friends with Zim anyways?

Dib rests his big head against his knees and hugged them with his arms. He doesn't know what he should do. How do they move forward? How are they supposed to treat each other? It was too much for both of them. Dib wonders if Zim feels the same like him.

Like he's sinking endlessly. Part of him wants to fight hard to reach the surface and yet it's slipping farther and farther away like it's so pointless. His heart aches and he wants to scream in frustration and just throw everything around him. He should accept this. Accept it's never going to work out, and there's this weird sensation inside him.
