Chapter 2- Chief Song
He did not look amused at my remark, he grunted like a cave animal and went upstairs to what I thought might be his office. The older man excused himself, I turned and patted Joseph, "He is a joy to behold."
"That kind of attitude will not fly here. Chief has a lot on his plate, don't take it personally." He replied and continued whatever he was doing, I could not tell if he was admonishing me or comforting me; whatever it was, the men continued to work silently, pretending to disregard my presence. I made my way upstairs, I could feel their gaze, it was like they were expecting some sort of drama. I was a lot of things but I avoided drama like a plague, it brought unwanted attention and I had to ensure my image was clean if I wanted to get a prospective husband. The word alone made me gag but I knew that one day I needed to settle, I couldn't keep living this way for the rest of my life. As tempting that might sound, I needed security and stability like I needed water. I took a deep breath before knocking, the deep voice I thought my mind had exaggerated its effect made way to the pit of my stomach.
"Come in." He said.
I went into the office and was surprised by what I saw, the space wasn't as small as I thought it would be and there were books, lots of them arranged on the shelf beside him. His office smelt like oil, vanilla and disinfectant at the same time, by the time I saw him, really saw him under the light, I rolled my eyes internally at the way my stomach flip flopped. I had a weakness for beautiful men, I know! I guessed it was one of those character traits I inherited from my mother but I had my libido under control. He wasn't the first good looking man I'd seen and he probably wouldn't be the last, I should be safe since he saw me as an inconvenience, It was okay even though I wasn't sure what they did here. It wasn't like any manufacturing station I'd seen.
"Sit." He kept talking in single word sentences like it was a chore to speak in full sentences, he would probably be like one of those annoying people who never completed their sentences when chatting and use acronyms. I did as he wanted and he stared at me, I couldn't decipher what he was trying to do with the intense glare he had on me but up close I could see that he had Asian heritage which would explain the thick black hair on his head, he had to be mixed but mixed with what, I tend to make a game when I felt awkward and boy... did I feel awkward. His straight nose, long lashes, full lips and his brown eyes, I took note of them carefully, it distracted me from his unrestrained observation. I thought he was trying to see deep into my soul and make away with whatever secrets were there.
He asked resignedly, "Why are you here?"
"To make money." I answered simply.
He paused waiting for me to go into details but my answer was as simple as that. He leaned back into his chair, "Are your eyes real?"
"As real as your nose." I answered without amusement.
"There is a hierarchy to things, I am your chief so that means when I ask you a question, you do your best to answer without sass." He said brusquely and added after a beat, "What can you do?"
"What do you want me to do?" I said in that same monotone voice.
"That wasn't an answer."
"I am good with my hands, but not so great with my head."
"That's what your result says, you managed to fail nearly every written exam but passed every practical tests with flying colors. It is almost ironic." He said slightly amused based on the tilt of his lips.
"It is ironic."
"What do you think we do here?"
"I told you. Thinking is not my strong suit."
