Chapter 66: Cock and Bull
*Fedor’s POV*
There have been many absurd things I have heard in my whole life and one would expect that there was no way I could get shocked to the point of silence by now. I once saw a man rob a store with a banana, and succeed; no the banana wasn’t hidden yet the salesman had been so scared of the masked man that it never occurred to him that a banana couldn’t do much harm. I had also had a man with two wives and three children promise to cater to all my needs if only I could allow him touch my feet, he was on his knees and all; I was flabbergasted then. Even when the bank told me that I was obligated to pay my parents debt at the beginning and changed their mind all of a sudden citing I wasn’t my parents and it would be marked off as bad debt. I was speechless then too as well but this, this one takes the cake. To say I was confused would be an understatement of the year and so I thought I might have heard wrong, “I think I heard wrong, could you repeat that?”
She leaned into her chair and leveled her gaze on me, “I want you to get married to Kurt.”
It did not sound better the second time and I wasn’t surprised when I released the most unladylike snort from my lips, “Are you going to die soon?”
“No.”
“Did you hit your head?”
“No. How long are you going to ask these questions?”
“Wow, you are even patient with me and not dismissing me. That’s crazy, I believe you have lost your mind.” I muttered aloud.
She sighed, “If I have to be linked to one of you people, it is better that it is someone I know and you have lived up to your potential, I have to say. I never forgot how daring you were when you asked for my son’s hand in marriage, I might have gotten rid of you but I never forgot how you promised that you could make him happy, I am holding you to that now. You get the family’s name and prestige and I get to avoid getting linked to anyone unpredictable.”
I blinked, she was serious, by God; she was serious. I swallowed and wondered if I should enjoy this moment or let it go as quickly as it came and I laughed more at myself. “No Queen, I can’t marry Kurt.”
If she was shocked, she did not show it; “Why?”
“I am in love with another.” I answered honestly.
“Can he give you what you have always wanted?” She asked.
“It turns out that what I need and what I thought I wanted are two different things.”
She smirked, “A woman in love, there is no one blinder.”
“I have heard that before, I am sorry that you entertained that thought, it almost heals something inside of me even if it’s for shady reasons. The government doesn’t want you to marry another powerful family, do they? Because then you’ll become too powerful.”
She looked at me with surprise and one can hardly blame her, if anyone thought I was obtuse now had not met my younger idealistic self who believed that things would work out exactly as I wanted if I played my cards right, younger me would have been furious for refusing this marriage proposal. Queen smiled, “I see someone has grown up.”
