Chapter 74 – Consequences
*Fedor’s POV*
I was not in the mood to go to work and I called in sick, and was not surprised when Mr Charles allowed it, I was not so stupid that I could not tell how differently he treated me from others and even if I did not take advantage of it, it did not stop the wagging tongues at work. I spent the day doing my favorite thing which was nothing and it was fun, I surfed the net and got an inspiration to visit the public library. I laughed at myself, who knew that a day would come where I would choose to go to a library without a gun to my head. I wore my oversized T-shirt and trousers and walked there taking in my usual environment, I exchanged greetings with peddlers and vendors as I leisurely made my way through the busy street and went into the worn-out library. The inside looked better and warmer than what was on the outside, the computer models were old but gave an antique feeling about the place, the books were even older and I was surprised to see the young librarian. Young and attractive woman was not what I expected with the aesthetics, she gave me an overly excited warm smile.
“Hi… How may I help you?” She asked enthusiastically.
“Hello… I am looking for books on self-development and decision-making.” I said while looking around, this building had been around for longer than I had been alive yet someone had kept up with renovation and repairs, it was good to know that this place hadn’t been deserted or changed into one of those mind labs, that is what I called it but they called it the research lab over here. I did not like the idea of tapping my mind into anything, it was unstable enough as it was, I did not need any more stimulator and I had come to discover that I enjoyed having the feel of hard-cover books in my hands. The lady eyed me up and down before noticing that she had been staring.
I watched the flush of her cheeks before she remembered to talk, “I am sorry, it’s just that you don’t look like the type to read motivational books, I thought you’d go for dark romance or something similar.” She said brushing the idea off before she started on describing where I could find such books.
“Hold up… Dark romance?” I asked.
“Yes…” I watched her figure out what I was trying to do.
“They are novels and from the name dark romance, I’ll assume the darkness has nothing to do with the switching lights off.”
She giggled and answered, “sometimes.”
“Okay, do you have some recommendations?” I asked and anyone would have thought I gave her a gift, her excitement was infectious as she led me down a room and picked out books she was certain that I would love. It was not my first time reading a novel but I could never get to the end or middle for some reason and I did not want to tell her that and dampen her excitement. When she was done, she led me to where she swore was the best seat in the library, and even picked the order of the books I would need to read. When she finally left me, it occurred to me that I hadn’t asked for her name but never mind, she came back with the creamiest coffee I had ever seen and gave to me saying the words, I would need it just before she gave me privacy to read.
I started with what she swore would ensure I would never read ordinary novels again and when I thought I might doze off, I felt my eyes widen and my core tighten. I smirked at the contents of the book and laughed internally; I had a sudden respect for writers belonging in every century because my imagination suddenly became quite vanilla as I read more. I had lost track of time, space and the center of gravity at the time I was at the third book. I had gotten ideas and inspiration for practice, who was I kidding? Abstinence after I had tasted of the forbidden fruit, I might as well go deep and down like the woman in the book was doing. There was common sense and what I had noticed so far was that these books lacked them, people liked to play with fire apparently. It wasn’t porn, it was a piece of art, they all were and with every turned page, the librarian was right, I would not remain the same.
