Chapter 15- The Scoff

Fedor’s POV

I waited for Chief Song to refute this statement or at least provide some sort of explanation that I wasn’t privy to or qualified for. Echoes! That was what the restaurant sounded like to me at that moment. It felt like someone had my heart in a crushing grip. “Oh.” That was all I could manage with the turmoil inside of me.

I sensed Kurt’s attention on me and shrugged, Chief sighed while Rwan burst into laughter, “You should have seen your face. Oh, it was worth it. I was kidding, what century are we in? I can’t believe you fell for it.”

I was too stunned to say a word. I chuckled at first then started laughing without humor, “Okay. I am done today, what about you Kurt?”

“Let’s go for a drink downtown. I know a place.” Kurt answered and I wanted to get out of here, even if Rwan said she was kidding, my reaction to the momentary glimpse of a future without Chief lit up a red alert in my brain.

“Not a bad idea.”

“We could drink as well; we were just getting to know each other. I feel deeply in my soul that this night can be fun for all of us.” Rwan’s eyes lit in victory.

“Rwan. Enough please, the respect I have for your father is the reason I have tolerated your behavior tonight. She is not usually like this; she is usually a lot more pleasant.” Chief apologized on her behalf and that irritated me more.

I shrugged like I did not care, “It’s all right, it’s not my first rodeo with the prim and pompous.”

“Was that a dig at me?” Kurt frowned and I winked.

“Oh you all, no sense of humor whatsoever. Are you running from me Fedor? I thought you’d put up more of a fight.” Rwan raised her brows in a challenge.

I groaned, “Do you go around annoying people? Or am I special?”

“You are special, very special.” That was all she said before I decided to visit the washroom, Rwan was crazy and not the fun kind of crazy, there was an unhinged look in her eyes and I wondered what I had done to upset her, tonight was not going as well as I thought it would. It was a rollercoaster from one event to the other. Now, I just wanted to go back to my small apartment and knock myself out. I came out of the bathroom to see Rwan waiting and leaning on the wall for me.

“I can’t see what Chief sees in you. I have been trying to get him to marry me for three years, three years Fedor. I have the money and the connection for him to live the life he deserves, we grew up together you see and whatever you have going on with him doesn’t hold a candle to what we have and our history. He might be smitten by you right now but that will pass, you know as much as I do that love or lust can only take you so far.” Rwan said in a single breath knocking the life out of me.

“Why do I threaten you? This is the first time we have met; why do you take it upon yourself to antagonize me when you don’t know anything about me? Like you rightly said, I barely knew Chief so what has a girl like you so rumpled up that you thought it was a good idea to confront me in the bathroom?” I washed my hands nonchalantly.
