Chapter 7- Disguises

Chief Song POV

“You have got to be kidding!” Fedor scoffed at me, she gave the fat suit a deadly glare and looked at me again, “why? Out of all disguises, why this one?”

The men were amused by the turn of event, I was as well, “Napolo doesn’t take too well to women doing a man’s job. They have their gender roles painfully separated and we will be in and out before you know it unless you decide to stay in Martha with Castle but if you were to explore with us, we can’t afford to offend them.”

She flared, “I understood your point the first time you said it, my question is why a fat suit? I can wear baggy clothes and a beard, why do I have to wear that?” She pointed at the suit.

I groaned, “Fedor, I cannot cater to your sensibilities right now, you cannot hide your breasts and ass behind baggy shirts, the suit is the sure way to hide your feminine traits and even with that, we still have to find something to do with your massive curls.”

Fedor closed her eyes, I imagined that she was counting numbers to relax and after some time she opened her eyes, “Fine, I am a team player. That was on my resume.” She muttered to herself and wore the suit grudgingly. “What kind of misogynistic place is this?”

“I doubt it would qualify as misogynistic, they have their values as a people and just because you don’t agree with them doesn’t make them misogynistic. Men are not allowed to do what women do as well, it is a two sided coin.” Naim said to her while helping her adjust the suit.

Fedor widened her eyes at him, “Oh, now you speak to me?”

“You didn’t speak to me either.” Naim grumbled and helped her weave her hair into cornrows, by the time he was done, she could pass as a medium sized pudgy man. Naim was a man of many skills, which included weaving as it was. I ignored the green knife turning in my belly as Naim could touch her hair freely and I had only held one stray lock. This was not very leader like of me and I knew it so I swallowed every irrational feeling to focus on the goal.

Fedor jumped and was surprised, “This is lighter than I thought it would be. Oh, I thought it would be uncomfortable, this is pretty fun and by the way Naim, coins are always two sided.” She chuckled and grabbed the big tummy, amused. Carlos laughed at her, he was a short man with a sense of humor, Fedor was wrong about one thing, the men were not open to her because she was a woman, they would have treated any stranger the same way. It would take time for them to get used to her presence yet here I was barely able to remember what life was like without her. My attitude and thoughts towards her were embarrassing to me and to anyone who could read me, I had made a decision and I would stand by it even though it killed me.

The mission was simple yet complicated, “There was a scientist in the early 21st century who was believed to have created a map of the dead sea, he believed that there was form of life underneath the sea. I know how ludicrous that sounds but that is none of our business, we are to retrieve the map. Carlos and Joseph traced the last known presence to Napolo where said scientist retired and died.”

“Dead sea?” Joseph adjusted his glasses and repeated as if hearing it for the first time. “Again, the sea has high salinity, not even fishes can survive. He was mad, even though we managed to trace where he died, there is no possibility that whatever we find would be legit. He was incarcerated because he was mad. If there were any specie that survived or lived under water, I doubt they would be human or anything we have ever seen or experienced before. I still think we should cut our losses and declare it unfeasible before we lose time, energy or worse; our lives.” He had repeated the same stance with me for the past few days, he thought repeating it again in the presence of the crew will make me change my mind.
