Chapter 25: Seeing Things

Chief Song POV

There were many things wrong with this place but I couldn’t figure out exactly what it was, we met an unconscious Castle in the room we were given. It was an insult well pointed at me, I was glad that Fedor wasn’t separated from us at the very least. This job had gotten more complicated than usual, I should have known that there was never anything simple with what we did. I decided to stop thinking about what could be and focus on the rest of my team, they were exhausted and I did not blame them.

“This place smells.” Ode pointed out.

“Well… we are a lot of people in one room, things could get…” Kora mumbled and was cut off.

“I don’t mean your fart. The people out there, didn’t you notice how glassy their eyes were? They are on drugs, an hallucinogen of some sort, most probably plant based.” Ode looked around suspiciously.

“Peyote?” I asked.

“No, it doesn’t smell this way. It could be mixed herbs but it’s something dangerous. It is possible that we somehow have stumbled on an illegal factory.” Ode said in a lower tone.

“No, common! This is Makint, won’t that be against everything they stand for?” Joseph Whispered.

Fedor groaned, “I mean it would be a perfect hiding place to make things like that, no one would notice and they would have all the land that they need to produce something like that. They will also have access to the perfect sample group for experiments. It’s not a crazy idea but this is not a movie, things like this don’t just happen.”

“We can’t cancel anything out. Don’t eat or drink anything unless you have to.” I knew that made no sense, we had to be here for three days and it would be ludicrous not to eat or drink anything. At the end, we will be too weak to fight and run yet if we manage to eat, we could become like them. That was when it hit me, If what Ode was saying was true, then it meant that Bashi had me where he wanted me and after three days, I might not want to leave or my men won’t. “Scratch that, eat when you can.”

“What?” Fedor looked at me confused.

“There’s no point, for an influence of this magnitude it is not out of place to imagine that they could make anything airborne. What can I say? Don’t breathe?” I scoffed at myself.

“We are thinking out loud, aren’t we? For all we know, we might be wrong. I mean they did contact the government, why would they do that if they had something to hide? We might just be overthinking this.” Carlos added.

I hoped he was right and this was just one of his power plays. The room was mostly empty except for a very small bed, Castle was still unconscious but his heart rate was not out of the ordinary. The same woman that led us here opened the door and led us to another house. This was separate from the general community and unlike the first time, I wasn’t distracted and tried to see if what Ode had noticed was true but surprisingly we didn’t meet anyone on the way, almost like the crowd we had seen earlier in the day were figments of my imagination.
