Chapter 50

*Chief Song POV*

I coughed because that had startled me, “What?”

“It has to be her, water lasted longer before she came. I don’t know what else she needs to wash apart from that tiny body. She needs to be told not to waste water, we have to stop at Sici to refill despite the delay which in essence means we would be on this trip longer than we have to.” He explained and I relaxed.

To be honest, I did not like to think about the other outcome of the incident, and it occurred to me that no matter what I did, I could not always protect her, I was just one person. “Castle, we have all been through hell, why don’t we get a bigger tank in Sici instead? Do you want me to have a conversation with a woman regarding her body and the water she can use? Especially after what just happened?”

“I guess not, this could be her last trip. You are right; there is no point to this, one last trip!” He muttered before leaving.

Her last trip, I thought about that statement and I was not sure if I had the strength to let her go, maybe she was right and this was the best course of action, rationally this would have been my advice to anyone in her shoe, she just started her career and it wouldn’t be wise to throw that opportunity for a man. I wasn’t just a man, I was one that worshipped the ground she walked on, not that she would notice. I had lost my mind when I could not find her during the chaos, I was even madder when I saw the bodies in my room and when I caught a glimpse of her, it did not matter that people were watching, or that I had blood everywhere on me, I held on to her reluctant to let go and that was a promise I intended on keeping. I did not know why I deceived myself into thinking I could separate business from personal when a single glance of her hair made my heart pound and the lower part of me swell.

Fedor had no idea the power she held over me, my actions, reactions and decisions. I no longer cared if the world knew about us, that is a lie. I wanted the world to know that I was hers in mind, soul and body. I needed her like air, I did not want to scare away with how much she had consumed me, it scared me already and I could only imagine what it did to someone like her, she might not even care. She was unpredictable that way, I decided to ease my way into her life even if I wanted to ram into everything that concerned her, I needed her to think of me even if it was a half of how much I thought about her but she was not ready. She would run the minute she understood the gravity of what I felt for her. I sighed and finished what I was doing and made my way to Kurt’s cabin, the faster I was done with him, the better it would be for the rest of us. I opened his door and he gestured to the seat I was used to, I had decided to keep my calm with him, I had a feeling he enjoyed it when I punched him the first time.

“I have gotten the testimonies from your men, I will soon be out of your hair.” No greetings, no nothing. He passed a tableca to me asking for my signature. I was about to sign when he made a comment, “One funny addition though, one of them mentioned that you might have had a high tech weapon on board, that wouldn’t be right, would it?”

I raised my head to see him tentatively staring at me, he wanted to catch me offguard but luckily for me, I had never considered Martha a weapon even though I understood why she would be mistaken as one, she was built of a variety of complexities. “Won’t that be a crime?”

“Yes, it would.” He smirked, “You wouldn’t do anything remotely criminal, would you?”

“I would not go that far, no one is that perfect.” I answered vaguely.

He leaned back into his chair and watched me as he nodded, “I don’t care for you but I do care for Fedor.”

“So you have said, the bruise on your cheek is a nice touch, I could offer to give you another so that it’ll match.” I said deliberately without an ounce of emotion.

He laughed, “So violent. That is not a good trait in a leader.”

“Cockiness isn’t one either.”

“I guess we are both unqualified to lead, since she would be transferred; have you thought about what it would be like for her?” He smirked.

I remembered what Kora had said about Kurt being influential in Carl Industries but they are supposed to be rivals, and I did not think that they would allow for any external interference from each other but people with money always found ways to make it happen. “Did you have anything to do with that?”

“I did.” He narrowed his eyes at me, daring me to do something like become violent again.

I sighed, “Are you that insecure?”

He chuckled, “No, but she might be. What about you? Are you afraid to let her grow wings by herself?”

“You are nosy.”

“You are controlling.”

“Annoying.” I pointed out.

“Too attractive.” He said which took me out of balance.

“What?”

He grinned, “Fedor has always had a thing for beautiful things, people and so on. Her mind might not be in the right place and this decision could destroy everything she has managed to work for, she said she wanted a marriage of convenience but her actions have never matched, not even when she proposed to me. Look at her, she could have gotten any man of my class and even me if she wanted, before meeting you but she didn’t, she never made the effort. She worked twice as hard as anyone, she has more skills than anyone but won’t even consider using them as a way to meet the kind of people she said she wants, the first time she falls in love, it’s with a man far away from her ambitions. Do you know where I am going with this?”

I frowned not wanting to listen to anything more he had to say but curious to know what his point was, “Get on it, I don’t want to stop you now.”

“Fedor isn’t much of a liar with everyone else but herself. She won’t admit it but she has always wanted more than the mundane life.” He scoffed, “Her mind is too restless, she won’t last a day as only a wife and nothing else. You on the other hand are like her except you know exactly what you want and you have always gotten them, I ran a check on you. Very impressive, you could do more with who you are and what you have but you have chosen this life. Why?”

I sneered, “Since you know so much about us, why don’t you guess?”

“Tsk… Trauma, decisions, being abandoned, running and chasing the wind, afraid of roots. Before her anyway.”

“I don’t have time for this.” I started to sign each of the crew’s statements.

“Why did you not hit me this time?”

“By the seas, you are infuriating,” I muttered.

He smiled, “I don’t care for a lot of people but I owe Fedor. I did some stupid things as a teenager and she did as well but I lacked the consideration to understand her and that’s why I am intruding. Fedor deserves a chance to know who she is as a person and she would not be able to do that if she is always with you. She deserves a chance to discover her passion, and herself in every essence. This is all that I can do for her, she could hate me for it but I know it’s what she needs. I have seen the way she looks at you, no one is coming that close to what you mean to her.”

He called me controlling when he is worse that I could ever be, he lacked self-awareness, “I thought you were in love with her.”

“Feelings fade, what I have with her won’t fade.”

I sighed, “Fedor is a grown woman and knows what she is doing. Whatever your intentions are for meddling, I could not care less, whatever we decide to do is none of your business. Even you have a limit to your influence, have you thought about how she would react if she knew? Or that does not matter either.”

“No, it doesn’t and she has no expectations regarding what I can or cannot do. If your bond is as strong as you make it out to be, then you don’t have anything to be afraid of, I only told you this because of the respect I have for you and I thought it would be fun to get a rise but you are taking the fun away from it, speaking of fun; is Fedor aware of your hmmmmm hobbies? Selena, Miranda, what are the other names?.”

I stared him down because now I did not know what to make of him, “How far back did you go?”

“Far enough, how have you not punched me yet?”

“You are weird, odd and a combination of disconcerting characters into one.” I said mostly to myself.

He laughed, “That is not the worst thing I have heard.”

“Is that how you punish yourself? Physical pain? If I punch you now, does that mean the guilt you’ll feel about all of this would fade away?” I thought about it and for the first time I saw his expression change, even though it was for a slight second, I knew I had him.

He shook his head, “Not bad for a third class Chief.” He admitted. “So will you?”

“A better man wouldn’t or would depending on how you look at it.”

“So what are you? A better man?”

I scoffed, “No.” I socked the other side of his cheek, I don’t know why I waited so long to do this, it was satisfying.

“Now, it matches.” He grinned with blood in his teeth. I had met crazy people and he ranked pretty high up on that list. I finished signing off on the statements and stood to leave.

Kurt asked, “So will you stop her from going?”

“It is none of your business.” I said and left, back to Martha. I was about to order the crew to prepare for departure when I saw that most of them weren’t around then I followed the loud noises to Fedor’s room, I opened the door to see that Fedor and Castle were in a shouting bout with Kora trying to stop them from ripping their heads off. Naim was seated on the bed with Carlos watching it unfold when I asked, “Why is this happening?”

“It is the finished water, Castle had accidentally left the tap running while he answered the call of nature, Fedor advised him not to waste water and Castle called her a hypocrite. Then it begun and never quite ended.”

I sighed, the damn water. “Enough! I don’t want to hear it, I have uploaded our course and we depart for Sici now! No more talk about water!”

I said in a tone of finality and left the room, Kora followed closely behind and whispered. “This is what I meant, you should have coaxed her and picked her side. How will you ever win her?”

I groaned internally, “Why won’t anyone mind their business?”

“Who isn’t?” Ode asked while he was packing his things.

“Kora.” Carlos answered, “He has been behaving strangely.”

“True, he does this when he has secrets.” Castle answered.

I could see where this was going and I did not like it, “That’s enough.”

Castle and Kora exchanged words in whispers, when Castle talked very loudly for every member of the crew to hear, “Chief is in love with Fedor?”
