Chapter 63: Principles and Reality
*Chief Song POV*
There were different thoughts that went through my head and I recognized one, interest; I was interested in doing this because it would be something of a challenge but would the risk of abuse outweigh the good it could do? This was not a question I could answer and I wasn’t still sure I wanted to be responsible for any weapon of mass destruction, defense or not and so I told him to give me time to think and deliberate on it and would send my message through George. I was going to bury him six feet under, maybe seven feet to be sure. This was not what I had on my agenda but I meant what I said that I was going to think about it, I had proposals from the military that I had rejected over time, If I tried to do anything battle related, it would absolutely garner attention which had been what I had been avoiding for the longest time. I could hear George’s voice in my head, “what’s wrong with attention Song? The people who are remembered in history are those who got attention. Did you think that everyone mentioned throughout history were the absolute best in their field? Fuck No!” I shuddered as I replayed every argument I had with George over the years and it looked like he had decided to take matters into his own hands. We passed through the dangerous waters in silence and was broken by Kora as he muttered aloud, “That has to be one of the most intimidating moments of my life. Do you see how those men were built?”
I found it hilarious since Kora was taller than most men, in a way we were lucky that we were not trapped in a war and left without a choice. Ati was right, I was this way because I had the choice to walk away and not everyone had that luxury and sometimes the only way to survive was to fight or give up. Naim walked up to me when everyone else got distracted, his intelligent eyes twinkled as he got to me, “What did he want?”
“None …”
“I knew you were going to say that and I prepared a counter to that, I am your security consultant. I should know.” He said with confidence.
I chuckled, “Isn’t that role more ceremonial?”
“It is still a role. He might be ruthless but like you; he is also a man of principles.” He informed me and I knew that Naim must have gotten a lot more information than I had.
I smirked, “Your girlfriends provided you with that information?”
“I have no girlfriends, I am too free-spirited to be tied down to anyone and stop trying to change the subject, I have the means to provide you insight and you owe me.”
“I do?”
“You broke my ribs in an attempt to cheer you up.”
“They weren’t broken.”
“It wasn’t your body.”
I sighed, he was more incorrigible than Kora; “He wanted me to make him something that could give them an edge in the war.”
“He knew who you were and what you could do.” He said that as a statement.
“Yes.”
“And you said no; yet he did not force you even though he had the upper hand or he could be manipulating you seeing that he knew you. Is that what you think?”
“I wasn’t thinking that until you mentioned it. He did not seem like a bullshitter but what do I know about people?”
“Do you want me to look into him as much as he has looked into you? It is only fair. It could help you make the necessary decision.”
I narrowed my eyes at him, “How did you know I had a decision to make?”
“You keep underestimating me. You went back and you have a what do I do now, this is inconvenient but interesting face. Kind of how your face looked the first time you met Fedor.”
