Chapter 36: Needles

*Chief Song POV*

Fedor sulked all through the time she got ready for the hospital, I had driven her back to her house while I waited for her to get ready, and she stalled for as long as she could before she resigned to the fact that I wasn’t giving up. She closed the door hard as what I hoped was the last sign of rebellion. “It’s only the hospital Fedor, not the hangman noose.”

“What is the difference?” She fastened her seat belt.

I laughed at how silly she was, “Okay, We’ll go see a movie afterward, there you can have all the ice cream you want.”

She eyed me suspiciously, “Are you, my boyfriend or my mother?”

“Someone has to care for your health since you are obviously not up to the task.” I drove off in the direction of the hospital. It was good that it was a private hospital, I met Dr. Khan through George, he was a kind old man. He opened his practice after retirement and while it was more of a hobby for him, he was meticulous and one of the best doctors Kolanpur had to offer.

Fedor turned to look at me, “I have managed to keep myself alive so far. I am fine, I should know better than anyone. You are a nagger, worrying over nothing.”

“I am not worried; I want to be sure. There is nothing wrong with that, have you visited any hospitals since your mother died?” I asked gently.

She scoffed, “No and you knew that already.” I kept quiet, I didn’t know if her reluctance to go to the hospital was because of her mother or because of needles, Fedor gave the impression that she wasn’t overly sentimental but I wasn’t sure, my bet was on the needles. “Don’t feel guilty now, as much as I don’t like hospitals, I like that you are taking care of me. I’m annoyed but I am also grateful, if I were to avoid every place that reminded me of my parents, I would have left Kolanpur.”

“It’s the needles then.” I surmised with a smile and a grateful glance at her, I was getting to understand her, and she was getting to know me. She was a lot smarter than she let on, somehow she had gotten my need for everything to be laid out, it made thinking clearer and providing solutions easier. Fedor was a mystery to me, while I enjoyed unraveling every aspect of her, I also took pleasure in her surprising me. In other words, I liked everything that had to do with her.

“Stop grinning Chief.” She frowned in annoyance. “Does this mean that you are in a perfect posture of health?”

“Yes. I am healthy.” I answered with a smirk and added, “I will be with you for a long time Fedor.”

She chuckled, “Life throws us many punches kiddo. You don’t know what might happen, some drunk could come from nowhere and throw us off the roof, you could end up with amnesia and I could end up paralyzed from the neck down but since you don’t know me, you can’t tell what I must have meant to you before the accident, then you move on with your life and I am left alone in the hospital to shrivel and die under the care of the government and when you finally remember who I am, you would have gotten the red-haired Rwan bitch pregnant because she stood by your side when you had no inkling of who she was then, of course, you fall for her cause who wouldn’t because she has flawless pale skin. When you run to my side, I would have given up on life and I would just have been exiting this plane for the one beyond, and then the guilt of abandoning me eats you up and you get into drinking. Rwan gets so frustrated and worried that she loses her pregnancy, you feel guiltier again that on your way to the hospital, you drive drunk and hit a truck and lose your life abandoning another person again.”
