Short Story Collection- Chapter: The Janitor
➡️ What if Kai didn't miss his morning jog?
Blood. Urine. Feces. Body parts. Vomit. You name it, Kai has cleaned it.
Kai Huening is a mortician. While he didn't care much for dead bodies, he decided it would be better for a Huening to take over the business instead of a stranger. That funeral home had been in his family for generations. It was only right it stay that way.
Because it was a small business, his finances were tight. He wasn't tied to a commercial company though not for a lack of trying. They just didn't see his business as worth aquiring. Therefore, Kai was severely depressed. Every cadaver was envied. They were dead. They didn't have to worry about bullshit like money. He wished it was his face on the metal table instead of them.
Running was his only relief. He loved to go on jogs. There was a 5 mile trail that he ran every single morning. It looped around a lake and lead to a forest behind his house. The sunrise was always picturesque. Rain, snow or shine, he never failed to run. While he jogged, he went through all of the things he needed to do in his head today. Prioritization lead to thoughts of suicide. Something he would never go through with but heavily considered.
Today, Kai felt really fucking lazy. He stared at the ceiling, wishing to die again. Rain pattered against the windows. Even more of a reason to skip his run. The perfect weather to die. If Kai wasn't going to run, he was going to force himself to at least take a shower. He got up and watched the water stream into the drain. "I'm so pathetic..." After racking up the water bill, he decided to just go on his damn run. By the end of it, he was glad he did.
One week later.
Kai blasted some music while he worked on his 3rd elderly body of the day. The phone rang. He didn't care to answer it. Probably another kid doing a prank call or even worse, a bill collector. The phone stopped ringing. A voice in the lobby replaced it. The guy shouted "HELLO?! I CAN HEAR YOUR MUSIC BACK THERE!"
The speaker was angrily put on pause. He mumbled "what a jackass" as he threw his gloves into the contamination bin. He forced himself to put on a smile then walked into the lobby. "Hi. Sorry, how can I help you?"
"I've been out here for ten minutes! I even tried calling!"
Kai wanted to throw this guy out of a window. The stranger was shorter than him and a lot skinnier. It wouldn't be hard. His annoyed thoughts were brushed away when he shook his bangs out of his face. "Again, I'm sorry. How can I help you?"
"What's your name? I'd like to speak to your supervisor."
"I am the supervisor as far as you're concerned. Now, one last time, how can I help you?" Kai could've sworn he heard the stranger say "you're next on the kill list" under his breath. He didn't give a shit. He proudly told the guy "you'd be doing me a favor. Thanks for stopping by."
"Are you walking away from me?!"
Kai kept walking. He shut the door to his lab then unpaused his music. He begun to sing to himself like he always did while he worked.
Yeonjun was ready to storm into the room until he heard the guy's voice. "Ghost Town" was one of his favorite songs. The blonde sung as if he was pouring his soul into it. Yeonjun was still pissed off but decided to wait until the performance was over. He felt it would be almost rude to interrupt it.
The moment the song ended, the door slammed open. Kai jumped backwards. "WHAT THE HELL?!"
"Who do you think you are to walk away from me?!"
"Who do YOU think you are to be a dick in MY business?!" Before the guy could answer, he paused his music again. Kai took a second to stare at the speaker. "Wait..." his head flipped back towards the stranger. "Were you listening to me?!"
"You're not worth my time!"
Kai grinned when he saw how red the stranger's cheeks were. He knew he was lying. "I agree. Now get out!" A second stranger marched into his lab. This one was shorter than the first one. He whined "Yeonjun what's taking so long?!" Kai mumbled "great. Another one."
The shorter looked over towards the blonde. His entire irritated demeanor dropped when he saw his face. He was so handsome.
Yeonjun had to bite his lip to keep from laughing. He knew exactly what his cousin was thinking. "Beomgyu go wait in the car. We're almost done here."
Kai interrupted "actually we are done here. Sorry you wasted everyone's time. Now if you'll excuse me, I have a body to prepare?"
Yeonjun very faintly whipsered "a blonde with an attitude. That's your type right?"
Beomgyu's face turned red as his cousin walked away. "Sorry about him. We wanted to make a deal with you."
"Not interested."
"With all due respect, this isn't an offer. It's a demand."
Kai stopped prepping the body. This was all so amusing to him. "And here I thought you were the nicer one."
"I can be as dangerous or as good as I need to be."
"Is invisible a third option?"
Beomgyu was upset that his line didn't work. He wasn't going to be nice anymore. The blonde didn't deserve it. "Look here. My name is Beomgyu Choi. My cousins and I are the most dangerous people you will ever meet. You have the last family owned funeral home in the city and we need a better place to dispose of bodies. Got it?"
"And what's in it for me?"
"You get to live."
"I'd rather not. What else?"
Beomgyu pulled out a knife and held it up to the blonde's throat so he would know how serious he was. His eyes searched the morticians'. He expected fear but got nothing. His knife went back into his pocket. "What do you want?"
"Money."
"We'll pay $5,000 per body on the condition you come get the bodies yourself."
Kai crossed his arms. He knew there were more demands coming. He just wanted to get this whole thing over with.
"You're also on call. You go by our schedule now."
"And if I don't agree?"
"We know who your sisters are. You may not care about your life but I know you care about theirs." Beomgyu got what he wanted. Fear. He held his hand out. "Do we have a deal?"
Kai shook his hand. He didn't have a choice. His sisters were a large part of the reason he hadn't ended his life. He didn't want them crying because of him.
"We have your number. If I was you, I'd answer all of your calls from now on. We don't like to be kept waiting." Before Beomgyu left, he took one last look at the blonde. He was so attractive. Part of him wished he was more patient. Any chance he had with his interest, was blown the moment he threatened his family.
Beomgyu left with his head held high. Love was weakness that he used and abused to get what he wanted. He just had to ask himself how badly he wanted Kai. And right now? It was pretty fucking bad.
