Yeonjun ran like hell. He nearly had to break both of his wrists to be free from those cuffs. The pain was his fuel to run faster. There was only one base in the area. The exact same one Beomgyu was in. And he was going to get there by sundown.
Soobin spent the next three days without leaving Kai's side. Jessie gave them a car so they could move cities. They found a war torn town. A few of the survivors were still trying to rebuild. They offered to help in exchange for shelter. In their little house, he showed him all of the photos they took together over the years. Any amount of proof he could think of that he was his actual boyfriend, he showed. Sleeping together at night was true bliss.
Kai loved Beomgyu for the fantasy but it was just that. A pretty daydream. Those pictures were more than enough proof that Soobin was telling the truth. He was shown another memory as they sat in bed under a blanket. His head rested comfortably against Soobin's chest. They were just enjoying each other's company as the smell of spring blew through the window. "I've missed this."
"You remember?"
"No." Kai took the blonde's arms and wrapped them tighter around himself. "I've missed the outside. He told me nature didn't exist anymore. That the war killed it all."
"Mason city wasn't hit as bad because we saved it. Other places weren't so lucky like this one. I hate him but he was telling the truth."
"Do you think he really loves me? Everything seemed so real when we were together. It still feels real. I can't tell what is and what isn't."
Soobin kissed his cheek. "I think that he does. You're much healthier than I ever thought you would be. I don't think he would've cared about your health if he didn't love you."
"He was always gone. I'm sorry I don't remember more."
"You didn't talk about his job at all?"
"No. He actually hated talking about it. He said his job brought out an ugly side of him." Kai held Soobin even tighter. "He said he could be himself around me."
Soobin didn't even know what to say. Beomgyu was an awful person but he understood needing some kind of sanctuary when everything else was hopeless. Kai must've been that for him. He could only imagine how much worse Beomgyu would be without him.
Kai sat up as he glanced out of the window. "He did tell me one thing though."
"What was that baby?"
"He thinks Yeonjun is dead. That's why he wants to hunt you so badly."
Taehyun was sipping a bottle of sprite when he saw something on the security cameras. He had to pinch himself to make sure he was seeing correctly. It was Yeonjun stumbling up to the entrance. Taehyun pressed the intercom. "SIR?!"
Beomgyu grumbled. He did not appreciate being woken up. "This better be good."
"Yeonjun is alive!"
Beomgyu shot out of bed and ran towards the cameras. He pressed the button to talk to the outside. "YEONJUN?! IS THAT REALLY YOU?!"
Yeonjun traced the sound to find the camera. He winked at it then saluted his best friend. "The one and only. You didn't think I was dead did you?"
Taehyun opened the door. The stairwell revealed itself. He couldn't wait to see him again.
Beomgyu anxiously waited at the bottom of the stairs. This could not have been more perfect timing. They froze at the sight of each other. "Yeonjun..."
"I knew you were still alive!" Yeonjun ran into his arms. They held one another tightly as they exchanged tears.
