December.

The Huening siblings were sitting on the couch in total silence. None of them were paying attention to what was on TV yet all three pretended to watch it. Their parents were arguing. Again.

Lea was holding a mirror to her face. Her long black strands were perfectly tucked behind her ears. With the wave of her hand, roses appeared to be braided into her hair. When she decided she didn't like roses, she waved her hand again to try petunias.

Meanwhile, Bahiyyih summoned her light brown great horned owl with a soft whistle. The owl flew in through the open window and landed on the arm of the couch. She whispered "hey Hikaru! Is their window open? Did you hear anything?"

The owl quietly cooed. Only Bahiyyih could understand what the bird was saying. She relayed the message that Hikaru couldn't hear what their parents were arguing about this time. They continued to have a hushed conversation with each other when the other two Huenings became disinterested.

Kai remained the only Huening who didn't completely understand their ability.

Lea was flora. She had a strong connection to plants. She could make them grow and could feel what they felt at will.

Bahiyyih was fauna. She could understand and speak to every animal and insect known to man. She had a bunch of animal friends but Hikaru was her favorite. They bonded when she was just eight years old and have been together since.

Julia Huening was mother nature. All living beings were under her care. Her children were her favorites. Winter was originally created with her husband when they had Lea. She just wanted three months where her baby was the only thing she had to care for. That was just supposed to be a one time thing. Winter became a permanent fixture when Kai was born. It was the Huening's favorite time of year for a reason.

David Huening was father time. He was the main reason for their arguments. Mother nature was going through a global warming period. She begged for more time to fix what was broken before being forced to reset the world. He wouldn't give it to her. He was torn between pleasing his wife and abiding by the laws of the universe. Either way he went, distaster was sure to follow. It was just a question of which disaster he could live with.

Kai on the other hand, had only a theory on what his ability was. He was currently testing it on the middle cushion on the couch.

Lea looked over to see her brother concentrating on his fingers. She decided to help him out instead of letting him struggle. "I think you're trying too hard. I grow flowers out of instinct. It's more of a feeling but you're turning it into a process."

"But nothing I've tried works!"

Bahiyyih and Hikaru turned their heads. They watched Kai repeatedly snap his fingers with no results. "She's right. You're trying too hard."

"Do you have any suggestions then?"

"How are we even sure you have an ability? Bugs are attracted to you. So what?"

"Not just bugs..."

"Sorry. Mostly bugs."

Lea reached behind Kai to flick the side of her sister's head. "Stop being mean."

"Ow! He could be normal! You don't know!"

"We're the children of titans. He has one! Do what I did when I first started. Think of something powerful. It has to be strong enough to where you feel it in your heart. That's how I grew my first flower."

Bahiyyih teased "it was a dandelion. A small little WEED!"

"I'd rather summon a weed than a rat!"

Kai quickly covered both of their mouths with his hands before they started arguing. His parents were already doing that. They didn't need to too. Once they stopped talking, he placed his hands palms up on his knees and closed his eyes.
