Beomgyu peaked out of his bedroom window to see all of the fog. His friends texted him about it. They said it was so thick that you couldn't even see your own hand if you held it out. He ignored their texts. His dad died two days ago. He didn't care to see anyone but his mom. Curiosity got the better of him and sure enough, it was the foggiest day he had ever seen in his life. The only thing visible in the streets was a lamp post and splotches of his neighbor's roofs.
The curtains were pulled shut. He wanted to go back to sleep. His dad was there in his dreams. Just when he climbed into bed, his mom knocked on his door. "Come in."
"Hey sweetie. I was just going to get us some burgers down the street."
"Dad's favorite?"
"Yeah." Ms. Choi sighed. "Your dad's favorite..."
"Let me get it for you mom. I don't want you going out in that."
"Sweetie, I'll be fine. Thank you though."
"Mom, I'm serious." Beomgyu stood up. He put some flip flops on then kissed his mom on her cheek. "I'll be back."
"Take the flashlight with you."
"Where is it again?"
"Should be in the garage by the rest of your dad's fishing stuff."
Beomgyu left. He dug through all of the camping memories to find that giant flashlight. The last time he picked it up was when he was thirteen. He hadn't hit puberty yet so it looked massive in his hands. He almost needed two hands to hold it in his younger self. Now that he was 20, it didn't seem as large. The flashlight went on after his orange raincoat.
The air was cool on his face. Beomgyu was glad he put the coat on. The beam from the flashlight got lost in the fog. It didn't do much to help him see where he was going. Luckily, the burger joint was just down the street. "Shit!" He almost tripped over a crack in the sidewalk that he forgot about.
At the end of the block was a glowing neon red "open" sign. Only one person appeared to be inside. At least that's all he could see as he wiped the window with his sleeve. Beomgyu went in then shut his flashlight off. The chef recognized him. The Chois have been regulars for decades. He watched Beomgyu grow up. He started to cry as he pulled the young man into a hug. "I'm so sorry kid. Your father was such a good man."
Beomgyu started to sob into the hug. He missed his dad so much. When the hug broke, he reached into his pockets to pull out some cash.
The chef demanded "put that away son. I'll have your order ready in a bit. Tell your momma, the wife and I will stop by after we close okay?"
Beomgyu nodded as he wiped his tears. He made his way over to a table and just watched the fog roll on by. It looked spooky but he felt peace within it. He didn't want to see anyone as his friends texted, asking if they could stop by. The weather made it easier to say "no."
"Your food is ready kid. I'll bring you guys some fresh enchiladas tonight."
"You can make those?"
"I'm full of surprises!" The chef was delighted to see a smile on his regular's face. "Go on. Get outta here. Hopefully this damn fog clears up by the time I close."
"Thanks." Beomgyu walked outside after he illuminated his flashlight. The fog somehow became thicker. He turned the light off. It was practically useless now.
A breeze swept rapidly through the street. Two pairs of electric blue eyes ran past him. "What the hell?!" Beomgyu whipped his head around to see nothing. Two seperate growls bellowed behind him. The sounds rumbled through his body as those eyes passed him again. "WHO IS OUT THERE?!"
A voice screamed "LEA STOP!"
Beomgyu frantically looked around. He couldn't see anything but the fog. He began to sweat. The bags in his hands were shaking. A pair of electric blue eyes ran towards him. He fell to the ground upon impact. The food spilled over onto the sidewalk. His jacket and shirt were torn. He found a large scratch on his torso. It began to bleed heavily as his adrenaline spiked.
The voice yelled "LEA! THAT'S NOT HIM!"
"WHO'S OUT THERE?!" Beomgyu looked up to see a pink haired man running towards him. His fur lined cloak floated behind him. Beomgyu shrieked "I DON'T HAVE ANY MONEY! PLEASE DON'T HURT ME!"
The pink haired man knelt down. Those electric blue eyes appeared behind him. Beomgyu saw what they were. Two large silver wolves; bigger than any in exsistence. Each took a place at the side of the stranger. The man looked at the wolf to his left and started to scold it. "LEA! HE LOOKS NOTHING HIM! YOU HURT AN INNOCENT PERSON!"
The wolf whimpered as her glow dimmed. Her eyes went from blinding blue to that of a puppy. She crouched down and whimpered some more. Her mouth didn't move but Beomgyu heard a voice emit from her body. "I'm sorry Prince Kai..."
"Leave us. I'll join you once I fix this. He's here somewhere. Find him before he kills someone else." The wolves disappeared into the fog.
Beomgyu crawled backwards when Kai reached his hand out towards him. "DON'T HURT ME!"
"I won't. I'm going to fix my wolf's mistake."
An icy cold hand touched Beomgyu's chest. He shuddered as his wound started to glow. His blood began to retreat back into his body. He felt his skin heal itself and it fucking hurt. Beomgyu bit his tounge so he wouldn't scream.
Kai removed his hand then stood back up. "You're healed now."
The wound was gone. Only a faint scar was left. "How-how did you do that?!"
"Magic I suppose. I need to go. Your town is in a lot of danger. Someone is hiding here. He's already killed a man two days ago."
"Two days ago?"
"Yeah." Kai started to walk.
Beomgyu ditched his food to run after him. "Wait! My dad died two days ago!"
"I'm sorry for your loss. Hopefully I find him soon so he can't hurt anyone else." Kai stopped walking when he realized this guy wasn't going to leave him alone. "Go home. You're safer there."
"No! He killed my dad! Let me help you! I want to face the man who killed my father!" The fog started to swirl around Kai as his hands glowed blue. Beomgyu was quickly losing sight of him. He grabbed onto the prince before he lost him for good. "Let me help you!"
The fog stopped swirling as the glow dropped. Kai took a deep breath. "You have no idea what you're getting yourself into."
"I'd rather die avenging my dad than live knowing his murderer is still out there. I'm going with you."
"If you can find me tomorrow, I'll let you join me."
The fog enveloped the prince. Beomgyu lunged forward but he was gone. "HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO FIND YOU?! HELLO?!" Kai was gone. That pink haired prince vanished.
Beomgyu had no idea what he was going to tell his mom but he had to find him again. This was for his father. On the walk back, he began to brainstorm a speech. "Mom, my friends are taking me on a trip. Don't know how long I'll be gone for. No... Mom, I uh... this is going to be so hard. Mom. I want to take a solo trip to clear my head. No, she will want to come with me."
Everything he came up with sounded stupid in his mind. No matter the excuse, one thing was for sure. Tomorrow, he was going to see him again.
