The Purple Palace's neon sign was flickering outside the alley. Even though this is a small underground jazz club, it has been looking for a new bartender. The job also came with a place to stay, it was especially needed after I graduated college 3 years ago. Staying in my hometown of Lancaster PA was good for a while, but I managed to save enough money to move to New York

I opened the door, seeing the inside of the small jazz club. 3 circle tables seated 4 chairs in the middle of the room. Directly across the front door was a small stage which had an upright piano and ringed microphone. To the left of the stage was the bar, 2 barstools sat in front of the counter and a small shelf stocked with alcohol was mounted on the wall behind the bar. To the right was a staircase which leads up to the upper floors of the entire building

I was about to ask for the owner when I heard a familiar voice

¥Virgil¥
Ro, what are you doing here?

My eyes looked towards the staircase, seeing my college sweetheart Virgil Maro. He went over to me and we hugged, being deprived of each others affection after 2-3 years

{Roman}
I moved to New York and needed a job, plus a place to stay since living in motel after motel for a few months wasn't the best. I have the slip of paper from your posters

I gave Virgil the crumpled slip of paper that advertised the want for a new bartender

¥Virgil¥
No one but you has come in to ask for the position, so you're in. Come on, you should settle especially after the commute

Virgil takes me upstairs, dropping off my bags in his - now our room. We then returned back to the club where someone in light blue was bringing in a drum kit onto stage. Someone else in yellow was practicing trumpet, he then stopped and began speaking to Virgil

<Janus>
Finally, Virgil's lover boy shows up. How many times has Virgil talked about you, or your hair, or your eyes, probably a million

The drummer sets up his kit, then chastises the trumpet player

(Patton)
J, be nice. Besides, it's always good to know that one of Virgil's friends wants to have a job here! Hi, I'm Patton Prescott, the palace's drummer! This grumpy fella is Janus Johnston, he plays the trumpet. Virgil here plays the piano, and we have a resident vocalist Dorothea but she unfortunately is a diva so her appearances are limited

{Roman}
I'm newly hired to bartender, but I can sing

<Janus>
Really? Show me what you have

{Roman}
Now?

<Janus>
Now, lover boy

I sing riffs off the fly, trying my best to impress Janus without acting like a show-off. After showcasing my vocals, Janus gives me a slow clap

<Janus>
You're in, Lover boy

I look to Virgil, wondering if I should be part of the band or if I should stick to bartending

¥Virgil¥
Ro can sing if Dorothea won't show. I'll have to find another bartender to manage the drinks if Roman's performing on some nights

{Roman}
You sure? I'm okay with only doing what I initially got the job for

¥Virgil¥
Yeah. I haven't heard you sing like that in some time. The patrons will love you, Ro

I bartended well on nights when the band wasn't performing but my first gig came up after Dorthea eventually canceled all of her future performances because she found an even bigger cash cow than the pay she received from Virgil, a wealthy husband who took her away to his Long Island mansion

My first gig went very well, the regular patrons of the Palace applauded my performance and asked if I wanted to go to Broadway. This one guy especially, a benefactor and talent scout who frequents the Palace named Logan Lowell. I declined his offer, wanting to keep performing at the Palace

Show after show, the patrons loved my vocals. I would get tons of flowers from a group of fangirls who kept asking for my number. I turned them all down, since my heart belongs to Virgil and only Virgil. Eventually because of my success, the palace was able to have enough money to move the palace into a warehouse that was right next door to the original location. Half the money from the large amount was put towards fixing up the warehouse and creating the new and improved Purple Palace

Virgil and I transformed the original location to our house, where we used the other half for the amenities, major issues like rats, and creating the space into more of a house. After 2 more years, I privately proposed to Virgil on my 100th performance

Virgil accepted, even though we couldn't get married in the eyes of the law. After procuring an ordained and gay accepting minister, Virgil and I got married. We expanded our family with the adoption of a son, Remy. He always begs for me to sing, and of course I couldn't refuse to perform for my son

The Purple Palace grew more and more as other locations started to open around New York, but people would always come back to the original site to hear Virgil's piano and my voice
