Diana sat in Professor Weasley's office, slightly hunched over on the chair, absolutely exhausted from the emotional toll of the day. Out of respect for her, the school had waited for Diana to wake before having the funeral for Fig. The day after the needed distraction from her friend, the school-body gathered together in the great hall, and she could no longer ignore the grief that held her heart. Seeing Fig's body again sent her sailing the waves of grief at new heights.
She was ready to head back to her hospital bed, take her sleep draft, and fall into dreamless sleep. But her teacher had asked her to come to her office once the vigil had ended.
Professor Weasley sat across from her, waving her wand as a teapot appeared and poured them both a cup. She offered her a cup, but Diana just stared at her- and after a moment shook her head. The professor gave a sigh, sipping her own cup. It felt like she was trying to buy herself some time before either of them needed to speak. After a moment though, she began;
"I know, things must be hard for you. I'm sure it feels like an endless rain of troubles that keep raining down on you, and- and I hate that I need to add to your troubles as we plan ahead."
She paused, waiting to see if Diana was going to respond, but the girl just sat broken and dejected across from her. She sighed;
"With the school year coming to an end, and knowing Hogwarts closes for the summer, we need to make sure we know where you are going to be for the next few months. I know you had planned to spend the summer again with Fig, he- he told me about the plans he had made with you..."
A small sob left Diana, but she made no other effort to speak so Professor Weasley pressed on.
"I know it must be so difficult, having yet another thing taken away from you. And this may not seem an ideal time to discuss this all, but since Fig's death some other things need to be made known."
She paused, seemingly unsure of how to continue. Diana sat quiet, still mostly unresponsive.
"Diana... before Fig's passing he made some...changes. I know- I know he saw you like a daughter. On many occasions he would talk my ear off about how Miriam would have loved being with you just as much as he did. I know that during the summer he was going to talk to you about becoming your legal guardian..."
This time, just silent tears rolled down her face- surprising herself with the fact there could be any tears left inside of her.
"I tell you all this so that this news will make more sense. Fig, decided before he died, that he would leave you everything that he had."
The tears still flowing, Diana looked up at her teacher, who was smiling kindly over at her.
"He wanted you to know that you were family to him, and that you would be able to be taken care of, even when he was gone. He has no other family besides Miriam, thus there will be no contesting. So his home, his savings, and everything else- are now yours." She paused again, giving the girl time to process.
"Now being a Professor here sadly doesn't bring in loads of Galleons, but between him and Miriam they were able to save enough that if you were careful you could choose not to work a day in your life- but I know that's not something that would be appealing to you. His house is also yours, it's a cottage just outside of Hogsmeade Valley. I had visited a few times before Miriam died, and it's a beautiful home."
Diana attempted to take all the new information in, but instead she felt like it just hung before her in the air.
"Now because you are underage-" she continued "you won't be able to live on your own, so there will need to be other accommodations made, but once you turn 17 you're welcome to be on your own in your own home."
The girl just continued to stare, mouth open now, absolutely dumbstruck.
"That all being said," Weasley continued, "Professor Onai has invited you to stay in her home with her and Natsai. They live just on the cusp of Feldcroft in the home they moved to last year at their transfer. I told her I would let you know about her invitation, and hopefully have an answer by the end of the week- do you think you know what you would like to do?"
Wordlessly Diana nodded her head, grateful that amidst all the sorrow there was still something that she could look forward to and smile.
