The morning had come too soon- Ominis was up late the night before, and was paying for it now. Normally he followed a fairly strict schedule when it came to sleep, if only to get Sebastian to go to bed as well, but he had trouble falling asleep last night. He and Diana had yet to decide when they were going to tell Sebastian everything- actually they hadn't talked about it at all. It seemed they both wanted to avoid it for as long as possible, but it was almost winter break and they were running out of time.
After tossing and turning for hours he finally got up and quietly whispered to his quill to dictate her a note saying they needed to meet the next day to talk. He didn't add much else, other than he wanted to meet her before their History of Magic class in their spot. He knew by the snores that his friend was asleep, but he wanted to be careful nonetheless.
He would wait until the morning to send his owl off with it, that way she would get it at breakfast. Thankfully his owl had chosen to sleep on his perch in his room rather than face the cold of the Owlery. Although there was nothing else he could do now, it felt good to have done something about it. The act of writing the note was enough to let his mind finally find sleep.
Now he was wishing he had just written her sooner, or better yet not avoided the subject until now. He got up groggily, and reached for the note he left on his nightstand. Making his way over to his owl, he tied up the note and sent her off. She didn't begrudge him the flight at this early out at least.
He got ready and headed down to breakfast, accompanied by Sebastian. After making their way down and finding seats, he was going to ask his companion what food was available when there was a whoosh above his head and then something dropped on the plate in-front of him.
He felt around and found a small letter waiting for him. He was about to reach into his pocket for his wand so he could translate it to braille when he felt the bumps under his fingers- it was already in Braille. He smiled, knowing exactly who had sent him this letter.
He had taught Diana the spell that he used to convert normal script to one he could read. She had insisted he show her after watching him change a letter he had gotten from Anne into Braille. It was a useful spell at times, but it unfortunately had its flaws. The spell could only cover the words on a single page, so if there was a book he wanted to read he would have to go page by page, repeating the spell over and over. When it came to textbooks he found it easier just to get them in Braille to begin with. Letters were easy enough to translate though, and he almost always needed to- the only thing that came ready for him to read were letters from Hogwarts.
It seemed that his friend had been practicing outside of their time together. She had made him read some of the pages she had converted and although there were some mistakes she got better every time. As he moved his fingers over the bumps now though it seemed she had perfected it enough for this small note;
Dear Ominis,
We need to talk today. Can we meet at our spot before history of magic?
P.S. good luck on your presentation today.
-Diana
He smiled, not just at the simple gesture of making the letter ready for him to read, but also they had obviously been thinking the same thing. He chuckled to himself thinking of her getting his note as she sat down for breakfast today.
"Hey-" he leaned over to Sebastian "is Diana here?"
He waited a moment as he assumed his friend was checking the other side of the hall at the yellow table.
"I don't see her- why?"
"Will you let me know when she comes in?"
"Uh I guess so- why??" he pressed again.
"I just feel like something funny is going to happen. Now will you pass me the potatoes that I smell?"
The boy handed him the food and he began eating. He was about done with his meal when he felt a nudge- notifying him that she had come in. After a few moments Sebastian called out in surprise and gave a small laugh.
"It looks like she got a letter or something and then she immediately jumped up and is now looking over at us. She looks a little bit crazy actually-"
Ominis chuckled and gave a wave for good measure. He heard an exclamation come from the other side of the hall, but she didn't come over. It would kind of defeat the purpose of them writing to each other if they just came and spoke right in-front of Sebastian anyway.
"What was that all about?" The Slytherin boy asked, mouth sounding full.
"Beats me-" he stood and grabbed his things "I'm going to head over early to my class, I'll see you later."
"Hey good luck on your muggle presentation today. You go tell them all about the photographs."
"Telegraph." he corrected, and heard his friend grunt in response. He chuckled as he made his way out of the hall. As entertaining as this morning was, he thought maybe if Hogwarts had a telegraph machine he may have gotten a bit more sleep last night.
