Professor Weasley smiled at the students in front of her, the sorting had finished and all the first years had been placed in the houses. There was a murmur of happy voices, talking excitedly all together. The moment ended though as Headmaster Black made his way to the podium. She took a deep breath, trying not to let her face match the apprehension she was feeling. Every year the opening speech was painful to witness, she had never seen someone so ill fitted to talking to children.
"Welcome back everyone." His voice called over their heads drawing their attention. "We hope that this year will be one significantly less taxing than the last."
Weasley held the bridge of her nose and sighed heavily. She listened as he went on and on about how he was inconvenienced last year, and how disappointed he was in everyone. She tried to remain calm, as long as he got to the notes she had given him he should be fine. After a long speech he finally looked down at the pages in front of him,
"Oh yes lets see here..." he held cards up to read, and she sighed in relief. "Because of all our school went through last year, we have been made more aware of the privilege we have to be at this great academy. Because of this we have plans to celebrate our time here more fully this upcoming year. First, quidditch will be reinstated-"
The room erupted into cheers. Professor Weasley smiled at their excitement, knowing the game had been sorely missed the previous year. Black on the other hand was less than impressed by the interruption, and after a few death glares, the room silenced again.
"Yes well that's all well, but do remember not to let these feelings get the better of you."
Weasley could feel the collective eye roll coming from all the staff members.
"There will also be a few different events throughout the school year, including a dance on new years eve, and-" He increased the volume of his voice as a murmur erupted, in an attempt to keep their attention, "And- a school sanctions dueling tournament-"
He had lost them again. The students turned to one another, expressing their excitement to their neighbors. Black attempted to express his disdain for the events, but no one was listening anymore. She knew the students found the Headmaster daunting, but fear did not equal respect. After a moment he seemed to realize he didn't really care, and left the stand- starting at the beginning of the meal. Finally, it was over. She knew that Black was at the end of his time as headmaster- she heard the rumors. But the end of his reign could not come soon enough.
