Poppy sat on her friend's bed, watching as the other six year girls in the room prepared for bed. They weren't in the same year, but they were friendly to her just the same. They didn't mind that she was waiting for Diana to come back, although she didn't really know when that would be.
"Where did you say she was again?" Adelaide Oaks asked her, looking at her through the vanity mirror.
"Oh she said she was meeting Ominis, I guess they needed to talk about something."
"Oh with the heir of Slytherin" another of Diana's roommates; Charlotte Morrison said. She cooed a little bit and then she and the other girl gave each other a look.
"What?" Poppy asked, not liking the faces they made to each other.
Adelaid turned with a smile and started brushing her hair. "I mean, Diana can have her entire pick of the boys at this school, and that's who she decides to go for? I mean he's extremely handsome, I'll give him that. But with how all the guys were talking about her today you'd think she'd at least play the field a bit more."
Before Poppy could reply Charlotte cut back in.
"I heard on the way out of the great hall, Andrew Larson; the new Ravenclaw quidditch captain, saw Diana and declared he was in love. Arthur was talking about it in the common room, trying to make Larson seem like a player. He was definitely just saying it out of spite though because everyone knows he's had a crush on her since last year."
"Oh Andrew is really handsome too," Adelai responded quickly. "If I was Diana I would definitely go for him, oh or Sebastian Sallow, although everyone knows that he is an actual player. Honestly if he hadn't been in such a foul mood all last year I would have thought he would try to go for her."
"But he and Ominis seem really close, there's no way anything could happen when she's with him-"
"Whoa whoa whoa." Poppy held up her hands to stop the girls "before this conversation goes any further I need to make something clear."
The older girls stopped their gossip and turned to face her, eyebrows raised.
"Diana and Ominis are not together, they are both just really good friends. As far as I know she hasn't been with anyone, and I don't really think she's planning on it either."
"What?" Charlotte asked, looking like she had been slapped. "Why not?"
Poppy shrugged "it's just not her thing I guess. She was busy last year, saving Hogwarts, apparently- among a myriad of other things. Now... I don't know, she just has never seemed interested in anyone. But if she does choose to date someone, or not, it's not really our business."
With that comment the girls dropped the topic, and moved onto talking about their schedules for the year. Poppy sat and watched them, fiddling with a string from her night gown that was poking out of her robe. As much as she didn't enjoy the gossip, the girls were right about Diana getting to have her pick of the boys her age. Everyone knew that she had stopped a goblin attack on the school, although the details she didn't think she had shared with anyone. She was brave, powerful, smart, and absolutely beautiful. And for someone who didn't like attention, she was definitely dealt the wrong set of cards.
She smiled as she plopped down on her friend's pillow. Diana had some very amazing qualities, but what Poppy loved most about her friend was how kind and genuine she was. From their first meeting she knew that Diana was someone that she could rely on, and rely on her she did. Their adventures together last year were amazing, and she couldn't have gone through any of them without her. She was glad she had given her a second chance at their friendship. She knew that they would have many great memories to come.
In this moment she felt relaxed and happy, knowing she would get to be with her friend. And it was because of the calm she felt that she slipped into sleep, before the lights had even gone out.
