Finally the climax of the party began its assent as Mr. Gaunt called everyone together so he could give a speech. He had sent their house elf looking for Ominis, telling him he needed to stand by his family while her master spoke. Diana stiffened as she realized what this meant, and she shot a glance to Sebastian as they all stood up to leave. His face was much more serious now, and it made her feel more nervous.
He caught her stare and made his way to walk with her through the hall. He reached out and grabbed her hand and gave it a squeeze. She turned to face forward and gave it a squeeze back, realizing that this may be the first time a touch from the boy didn't make her feel worse.
When they made it to the central room the other boy left them to go stand with his family, who were the center of attention now. The two siblings stood at the back of the mass of people, waiting for the patriarch to begin. Diana fought the urge to bite at her knuckles; she wanted to look as calm as possible. She opted instead to squeeze her friend's hand as hard as she possibly could.
"Thank you for joining us today- we are honored that each of you chose to spend this precious time in our presence-"
As soon as the speech began Sebastian gave her hand one last squeeze, which was much stronger than any of hers, and let go. She ducked down a little bit to try not to be seen, but in a room full of grown adults she felt that was easy enough done. As she made her way through the room she had to quietly excuse herself through a few walls of people, but they hardly noticed.
Once she was past everyone and near the back door she checked her surroundings and then casted a disillusionment charm. She opened the door just enough to slip through, and then moved out into the cold night. It was very dark now, especially as compared to the brightness of the house. The covering helped bolster her confidence that even without the charm it would have been hard to see her moving.
She picked up speed as she moved around the side of the house- she needed to get her bag. She hiked up her dress as she started to run, thankful again that she had gotten a shorter skirt. At the front of the house she found herself alone still, and quickly made her way to the shrub that was hiding her bag. She held her breath for a moment as she searched, nervous when she didn't see it right away. But she realized it had just fallen a little farther into the bush, and she let out a sigh. She had her cover, and her bag- all that was left was the animals.
As she raced back around the mansion she didn't bother to hide her footsteps in the snow. They had decided it would be a waste of time to try to cover the tracks, especially since there would probably be others around the frozen gardens. Either way it didn't matter much, they were barely visible in the moonlight, and would probably be covered in a new layer of snow by tomorrow.
Without any incident she made it to the vivarium. She was a little out of breath, but pushed past it as she held out her wand to unlock the padlock on the door. It was decently charmed, but not something to cause her problem. Thanks to Mr. Moon last year she had learned to open more secure locks than this. With a clunk, the latch opened, and the whole lock fell from its place on the door. With her wand in one hand and the bag in the other she wasn't able to catch it. The most she was able to do was stick out her foot- and the large, heavy, metal lock crashed down hard.
She winced in pain- trying with all her might not to let out a cry, but a few curses did slip out. Of all the things to happen tonight it had to be something stupid like this? As the lock had hit down she heard a snap, and shooting pain ran through her from the top of her foot. Tears ran down her face as she dropped down to her broken appendage. She didn't have any potions to help her now, and even in the pain she knew she couldn't let it slow her down.
