Last chapter I had to backtrack and go through a prior chapter. This time I had to go through two. Man. Also, I got to not follow the plot at the start, which is always fun. Finished this early and literally just came back from vacay so here's another one!
"Hum dum-de-dum..." Dr. Julien, a brunette man with small, round glasses, hummed a tune from a music box that had it's tune floating quietly in the background. The tune had grown on him like an earworm, since Zane kept rewinding the box over and over, every chance he got.
Well, that was because the tune calmed the baby whose diaper Dr. Julien was currently changing. The baby didn't cry much, but was noticeable stressed. Dr. Julien tried his best, but he had another son as well to take care of, which was making it hard.
"Father," Zane, the son in question, peeked from over his shoulder. "Can I help in any way?"
"No need, Zane." Dr. Julien said. "I'm just about... done!"
He laughed in accomplishment, he had never changed a diaper before. Zane wasn't exactly... born, Dr. Julien had never had to change a diaper with the boy.
Dr. Julien wrapped the baby in a (f/c) blanket, which had also found it's way to their home recently. Just like the music box, and just like the baby.
"Father," Zane spoke again "When is that man coming back?"
"Soon, I'd assume." Dr. Julien shrugged, sitting down on his bed while Zane sat next to him. The baby in Dr. Julien's arms reached a hand out, to which Zane offered it a finger to grip with a blank expression. "He said he was thankful for letting him stay here, maybe he lost something in the forest."
"But father, he left four hours ago." Zane pointed to the clock, and Dr. Julien adjusted his glasses.
"Gosh, has it really been that long?" Dr. Julien gasped as Zane nodded repeatedly, before standing up.
"Father, don't you see that the man has abandoned his son?" Zane said sternly, the way he did when he was upset but didn't know how to show it.
"Zane, don't say that." Dr. Julien didn't want to scold him, and didn't. "You should trust the man."
"But father, it is the most likely option-" This time Dr. Julien gently raised a hand when Zane raised his voice, nodding at the baby, who was staring wide eyed.
Dr. Julien started rocking the baby in his arms gently. "Zane, think for a moment. Do you really think a man as kind as he is, would do that? You have to have faith."
"In what?"
"In goodness."
"The man was sick." Dr. Julien sighed. "If he doesn't come back... we should go look for him."
"I understand." Zane said. "Will you be alright alone, if I go outside for a while?"
"I think I will manage." Dr. Julien smiled, seeing that the baby was seemingly going to nod off soon. "Could you chop us some wood while you're out there?"
"Of course." Zane said, heading to climb up the stairs that lead out of their house.
"Dress warmly, Zane! You don't want your processors to freeze." Dr. Julien called softly after him. Zane looked down at him and shook his head.
"I'm not cold, father." And he went outside.
Dr. Julien tilted his head. Even with Zane being just a robot, he still usually took the precautions to wear a jacket outside. But there he goes, in only his white t-shirt.
