I must've fallen asleep without realising it, as woke up the next morning with that nauseous feeling again. Only this time, it wasn't as over powering as some of them have been, but it was still strong enough to wake me from my sleep. So much so, I sat up and covered my mouth with my hand, taking slow and deep breaths to help steady myself.
It wasn't until I finally bought myself to look around the cell, I noticed that Daryl was already awake. He was sat on the edge of the bed, twisting his knife between his fingers. He hadn't noticed I was up and I figured it would look very suspicious if I suddenly ran out of the cell.
With that in mind, I took another couple of breaths and sure enough my stomach began to settle. Once it had, I then moved to sit next to him. I didn't have to be there long to see there was something on his mind.
"Hey." I whispered and gently lay my head on his shoulder. "What's wrong?"
Daryl just sighed and turned his head towards me. "Zach."
"I know you guys were close, but there was nothing we could do." I sighed with him. "He was already bit and if you hadn't have stopped me going back for him, I wouldn't have made it out..."
"Stop."
"No, it's true." I sat up so that I could now see directly into his eyes. It was the only way he'd know I was being serious. "If you hadn't have pulled me out when you did, I'd be dead. Trapped under all that rubble."
The two of us then fell silent and the events that happened began to flash through my mind. I pictured us all joking around outside the store, to getting trapped under the shelves with Bob, to the moment the walkers began falling from the ceiling, to Zach and then to the moment the helicopter fell through. It was enough to make me shudder.
Daryl must've noticed as he then wrapped his arm around my shoulders and pulled be in close to him. I then felt him lightly rest his head on my own as he held me. "I'm sorry."
"For what?" I asked.
"What you said about Tyler. Not trusting you." He replied. "You're righr about him."
"You don't have to apologise for that." I sighed again. "The sooner he's gone the better. But for now it's best we keep an eye on him."
Daryl agreed and the two of us just sat on the bed and cuddled for a little while longer.
We then sat like that for another ten minutes before the two of us made our way out of our cell and down to meet the others for breakfast. I was lucky that by the time we got there, the nausea had completely passed and I was back to feeling myself.
Once we sat down and began eating, the others told us that Rick, Carl and Carol had gone out to start work, Michonne was going back out to look for the Governor and Maggie and Glenn were in the guard tower as usual. Everyone else was going to head out in a little while to do what they had to do. So far it was turning out like every other day in the prison.
Then, all of a sudden, gun fire echoed through the tombs.
"What the hell was that?" My dad asked, lowering the spoon away from his mouth. The noise had stopped us all dead in our tracks.
"Are people fighting?" Beth asked, cradling Judith.
There was then more gun fire, only this time screams came along with it,
"No." I quickly jumped up from my seat. Daryl then did the same. "Follow the protocol."
"Lock the doors to the cell block!" Hershal agreed as Daryl and I ran to secure the door to the tombs. Everyone else grabbing weapons and locking all the doors that lead out of the cell block. Our main priority was securing C block and keeping Judith safe.
