"What are these?" Mika asked as we approached the house that she and Carol had found. It was a small cottage with some sort of barbed wire fencing going around it. It looked safe enough.
We all looked over to her to see what she was on about. "Pecans." Carol replied.
"Oh, I love pecans." Mika giggled and started picking them up off of the floor.
As she did, Carol made her way iver to the fence and turned back to Tyreese and I. "You know, maybe we can catch our breath here for a while."
"We're still going to Terminus, right?" Lizzie asked. It was like she took the words straight out of my mouth. I may have different reasons to her for wanting to get there, but she'd asked first.
Carol nodded and lifted the rail out of the way for us. "We'll just stay a day or two. There's a well full of water. Fences. There not big, but they're something." She replied. "And we saw a deer, they eat pecans. We should be able to kill one to eat."
"We can eat these to, right?" Mika asked, putting the pecans, that she'd picked up, into her bag.
Tyreese nodded at her. "You can eat your fill then some-"
"Look!" Lizzie interrupted.
We all stopped and looked to what she was pointing at. There was smoke rising above the trees. "Bet that's what we were smelling." I glanced over at Carol.
"Looks far enough away." Carol nodded back to me before looking back at the smoke.
"I wonder how it started." Mika asked.
"Maybe lightning from the other night or a campfire." I shrugged.
"It probably where all the deer are coming from." Carol replied, putting the fence back up once we were all through. "We should leave it, just play it really safe in here."
We all then nodded as we made our way over to the front of the house and waited. Judith still playing with my hair as I carried her. From the look of it, the house seemed secure enough and the area around us was quiet, but we still had one other job to do.
"I want you girls to sit here, okay?" I said, handing Judith to Lizzie and scooting them over to a small bench at the ront of the house. They both nodded and sat down. "We'll go inside and come back out for you." Both girls nodded again.
That was when Carol and Tyreese headed up and opened the front door, where Carol banged on the door frame with the handle of her knife. I then pulled out my knife and jogged over to join them. "If there's one in there, it's not moving much." Carol said peering inside. "Let's just stay close, go slow room to room." Tyreese and I both nodded and she turned to the girls. "Girls you sit tight. You don't come in until we come out, no matter what you hear, okay? Lizzie's got Judith, Mika get out your gun. You're gonna need to stand watch."
I watched the worried expression cross Mika's face and Tyreese saw it to. "Stand strong little lady." He smiled and the three of us went inside. Mika was stronger than she let herself feel. We knew she was more than capable of taking care of her and her sister, she just needed to do the same and believe in herself.
Once inside, we all split up. Carol headed into the kitchen, Tyreese took the bedroom and I made my way into the living room. From what I could see, everything seemed good. There was a small fireplace, table, chairs, books and most importantly, no walkers. My room was clear.
Then, all of a sudden, there was a gun shot outside.
I dropped what I was doing and ran to the door where I heard Lizzie scream and another two shots echo outside. It only made my legs move faster and it was then I heard Carol and Tyreese behind me as I ran out the door and over to them.
