We walked in silence for a while as Beth steadied herself after her break down in the bar. As she did, I made sure we walked far enough away from the course, to the point she wouldn't be tempted go back. The damn girl was dead set on finding herself some booze and there was nothing I could do or say to change that. All I could do was go along with it and keep her sfae.
"Motorcycle mechanic?" Beth suddenly suggested out of the blue.
I looked down at her to see she was now walking besides me. "Huh?"
"That's my guess. For what you were doing before the turn. Did Zach ever guess that one?" She replied. It made sense now as to what she was doing. Zach used to do the same thing. Everyday he'd say somehing new and just like everyone else, I'd failed him.
"It don't matter. It hasn't mattered for a long time." I told her.
"It's just what people talk about, you know? To feel normal." She sighed.
"Never felt normal to me." I grunted. The truth was, Merle had taught me how to fix bikes. We never had any money to get shit repared by a professional so we just had to learn to do it ourselves. Other than hunting, that was one of the only other things I was good at.
We walked in silence for a while after that, stopping on the odd occasion to let a walker roam past. That was when I recognised the area. To anyone else, it would just look like another part of the woods, but I knew where I was.
Michonne and I had come across this place when we were out looking for the Governor. We'd gone inside to wait out a storm and it seemed pretty secure. At the least, it would mean we'd have somewhere to stay for the night. That's when I remembered what else was there and glanced over at Beth. She was just keeping to herself with her eyes on the trees.
I walked out of the trees, cutting in front of Beth, and looked ahead of me. The old shack was still standing. "I found this place with Michonne."
"I was expecting a liquor store." Beth said ungratefully.
"No. This is better." I told her, with mild annoyance in my tone, as I walked towards the shack.
Beth followed as I did and together we made our way around to the back. I then opened the door to reveal the crates of drink stored inside. I pulled out a crate and handed it to Beth. "What's that?" She asked.
"Moonshine." I replied as I took my own crate and we walked back around to the front door.
I opened the door and, like before, there was no one inside. I stepped in, placing my crossbow down on the table, along with the crate of moonshine. I then pulled a glass from the cupboard and poured a small amount in it for Beth.
"Now that's a real drink right there." I told her. Beth looked at it and hesitated. Seriously? "What's the matter?"
"Nothing." She shook her head and looked at the glass. "It's just, my dad always said that bad moonshine could make you go blind."
"Ain't nothing worth seeing out there anymore anyway." I shrugged and took a drink of water.
Beth then nodded and raised her glass to her mouth, taking a big sip. She pulled a face and looked at the glass. "That's the most disgusting thing I ever tasted." She smiled and downed the rest of her cup. "Second round's better." She grabbed the jar.
"Slow down." I told her as I watched her about to pour the liquid. She'd throw up if she wasn't careful.
"This one's for you." She offered.
I shook my head. "Na I'm good."
Beth looked at the glass and back at me. "Why?"
"Someone's gotta keep watch." I told her. I knew from before that if I start drinking I end up doing something I'd regret. Especially if the CDC is anything to go by.
