YOU
A knock at the door announced the arrival of my 'date'. I still couldn't believe that Liam had set this up without even asking permission. For all I knew, this guy could be a jerk.
I sighed as I stood, dusting off my jeans and prepared myself for what was to come. I hated being set up, and I'd made that perfectly clear, or so I thought, to all my friends. The person behind this door could either make my life a whole lot easier or completely ruin it.
I began to hope and pray that this boy wasn't going to fall for me when I felt nothing back because it was going to be so hard to tell him I wasn't as invested in the 'relationship' as he was. I was thankful for the little peepy hole my door had and glanced out to get a first look at my 'date'.
But when I looked, no one was there. The hallway outside my apartment was empty, no one stood around. That was odd. Whoever had knocked must have left immediately after. Were they having second thoughts?
I stood back and crossed my arms over my chest. I really should go after him seeing as he was Liam's friend. But I wasn't in the mood to entertain some random guy for Liam's benefit. As I pondered for the next five minutes over what my next move would be, I found myself being eaten by the guilt.
This boy who had come to see me was in the same predicament as me. I had to at least have some empathy towards him. I sighed as my guilty conscience played in the back of my mind and I reached for the door handle.
I yanked open the door and began quickly walking in the direct of the elevators. Hopefully I'd be able to catch up to him and reassure him a little. The elevator arrived as soon as I pressed the little button and I strolled in, pressing the little G button for the ground floor.
Thinking back to Liam's description of this mystery boy, he didn't seem all too bad. Granted, he hadn't given me much to go off of, but the small details he'd given were enough for me to feel sorry for his friend. When the elevator doors pinged and slid open I rushed out and ran straight into the person coming out of the other elevator.
"Oh," I gasped as I bounced back from the impact.
"Shit, I'm sorry," a male voice apologised.
I looked up as I rubbed my forehead and was met with the most beautiful hazel eyes. His usual spark wasn't there and instead was doubt, worry and what seemed like surprise.
"Ashton," I breathed.
What was he doing in my apartment block? And why hadn't he come to say hello? Did he have another friend in this block?
"Hey," he mumbled.
He scratched at the back of his neck nervously and his eyes drifted to his feet.
"Where were you running to?" he asked.
"I was running after someone," I replied breathlessly.
"Oh. Who?" he questioned.
"Just some guy Liam set me up with," I told him.
"Liam?"
"Yeah. He felt I needed a date to my sisters wedding so he set me up with some guy," I clarified.
My eyes glimpsed at the doors searching for this mystery boy. But there was no one lingering about. I can't deny the disappointment I feel that my blind date didn't show. It's not like he could have seen me, not liked what he saw and left because there was a door between us. Therefore, the only other explanation would be his nerves.
"A date?" he said, his voice wavering a little.
"Yeah but I guess nerves got the better of him because he left after he knocked," I said with a sigh.
Ashton watched me with curious eyes. He scratched his chin in thought, running the tips of his fingers through his scraggly beard. It still felt new to me seeing him with so much hair around his jaw and chin. He hadn't fully grown it, just a dusting of hair that covered his jawline.
It made him look more manly and sometimes I caught myself staring in awe at the perfection that was Ashton. He was like a painting, a picture, a work of art, a true masterpiece. You could look at him forever and never get bored. You could look at him forever and never find even a single flaw.
"Maybe he just wasn't ready," he suggested.
I averted my eyes away from his glorious cheekbones and stared into his eyes. There was something there, something deep and hidden but I just couldn't pick it up quick enough before he looked away. He cleared his throat and pointed over his shoulder at the door.
"I should go," he announced.
And with that, he turned and left. Well that was odd. Why was he even here? And what was with the sneaking around?
