ASHTON
I could hear her calling me, shouting my name over and over again. And every time she got nearer, I moved further away. The last thing I wanted right now was her sympathy. I know she had seen me breaking and she wanted to make sure I was okay. She felt sorry for me. I didn't want that.
What I wanted was her love. I wanted her heart. I wanted her word, her confession and her promise. I couldn't breathe without her by my side. She was all I ever thought about. And for that, I wanted to end it all. I wanted to end the unhappiness and the heartache. I wanted to be happy.
"Ashton," she called again.
Her voice was breaking, it was strained and I could hear the worry behind her words. She was concerned about me. I hated making her feel this way. But I was mad, I was annoyed at myself and I was lashing out at her. She didn't deserve me.
I stumbled in the dark, tripping over my own feet. I used the side of the building as a crutch for my numb legs. She was gaining on me. I could hear her heels clicking against the concrete. I panted, feeling the sweat dripping down my face.
"ASHTON!" she yelled, with a gasp.
I froze, my fingers scratching against the bricks. She ran at me, her body colliding with mine, her chest pressed against my back and her arms wrapped around my torso.
"Ashton," she whispered, her forehead pressed against my shoulder blade.
I pulled the air through my parted lips. My lips moved but no words fell from them.
"What are you doing out here?" she asked. "Where were you going?"
"Home," I whispered.
I wasn't sure she had heard me. She stayed still, his arms wrapping tighter around my waist. She sobbed quietly, her salty tears wetting my shirt.
"I need to leave Y/N," I told her, my voice gravelly and my throat tight.
She stood, grabbing handfuls of my shirt and pulling me around to face her. Her tear streaked face was breaking my heart. I hated seeing her like this. And I hated myself more knowing I was the cause.
"I can't stay," I breathed.
My eyes lifted as I stared at the darkened night sky, glittering with a million tiny stars.
"Why?" she sniffled. "Why are you leaving?"
"I'm not wanted here."
"That's not true," she gasped.
She cupped my face in her hands, my cheeks in her palms and she forced me to look in her eyes.
"Why wouldn't you be wanted?"
"You have Ken," I told her. "You have your date."
Her eyebrows furrowed and she frowned.
"Ken isn't my date," she said.
I looked at her, her eyes shining from the unshed tears. Her cheeks were flushed a pretty pink and I touched her soft skin with the pad of my thumb.
"Why were you walking with him then?"
"I didn't want to walk alone," she explained, with a shrug.
It connected. Everything was falling into place and the pieces of the puzzle were coming together. I was an idiot!
