Chapter Twenty-Four: Yeah, Hailey, don't push a girl when she's not ready.
"Where the heck were you?" Atreyi started to attack me with questions in the cafeteria, together with Hailey.
"I went home." I nonchalantly answered as I took the sip of my orange juice.
"Caleb told us that you were hurrying to go somewhere. Is there anything that happened?" Filled with curiosity, Hailey managed to just looked at me while I was munching at my food without even feeing a hint of awkwardness.
Because of that, I felt obliged to just change the topic. "How are you and Nigel?"
"Well he was..." Hailey started to talk but then Atreyi shot her a look which made her went back to asking why I left early. "Don't change the topic Jessamine."
"Fine." I released a huge sigh and replied to it vaguely. "I grew tired so I went home."
"Just like that? You missed the concert." Hailey groaned, probably believing what I said.
"Yeah Jessamine, did Caleb do anything to you? If he did then Hailey and I are going to kick his ass." As far as feminism is concerned, these two would probably join those rallying women against the improper treatment on sexes.
"Hai-ya!" Hailey pretended to do an art of kung fu trick by kicking, but instead of kicking some invisible thing, she kicked the table instead, forming a loud noise. "Sorry..." She shyly scratched her head.
These two friends of mine are the funniest ever despite their girly actions. I always wondered though why I always had girly friends. (Well Atreyi is girly despite being a lesbian.)
Hailey kicking the table made me chuckle together with Atreyi, so we started to tease her, and it had given me the opportunity to change the topic back to Nigel, her date.
"You don't need to impress Nigel like that" I tapped her shoulder and asked her how Nigel was during the party.
"Nigel was really sweet. We danced." Hailey started to daydream as she told me her story in regards to Nigel while Atreyi helped supplement some parts of the story that Hailey had forgotten. After hearing about Hailey's story, I asked Atreyi about Jordan Wheeler, and the story was the same... he was sweet, they danced...
"But Jordan was leaning in for a kiss and Atreyi stopped him!" Hailey gave a glare to Atreyi, mentally telling her that she just lost her chance. I did not react much since I knew why but I just pretended to be surprise by what Hailey said.
"Why not? Was Jordan not hot enough?" I tried my best to act and giggle so as not to make Hailey sense anything.
Atreyi averted our gaze by looking down at her baked macaroni. "I don't know... I just don't feel like it."
"Yeah, Hailey, don't push a girl when she's not ready." Snapping Hailey's attention away, I tried to change the topic once again to academics, a safe topic that the three of us would have something to say about.
From talking about Atreyi's project in Biology, to Hailey's every week newspaper roundabouts (she's one of the editors in the newspaper organization of our school), to my weird classmate in Politics class, we spent our lunchtime conversing happily just like normal days, though it's still sad that Maurice wasn't hanging out with us anymore. I wished to talk to Maurice in order to persuade him that he should come back to us that he shouldn't be awkward to Hailey.
