Chapter Sixty-One: Sorry, that's a premium chocolate cake. No wasting.
Connor was wearing a denim jacket with sleeves rolled up, covering his plain white shirt while matching the top with light khaki pants as bottoms. He was focused on scrolling on his phone with his back leaning on his Lamborghini, as I went to him and shyly said hi.
"Hey!" He placed his phone in his pocket and gave a small wave. "Happy birthday."
"Thanks!" I giggled. "Where are we heading?"
He opened the car door for me. "You'll see."
As he switched on the car engine, he gave a glance at me, in which I returned a glance to him.
"You dressed up nicely." Connor's compliment seemed to come straight from the heart. No flirting. No teasing. Just a good compliment that could brighten up anyone's day.
"Thanks. You also." I returned the compliment as I traced my eye starting from his shoulder, down to his rolled sleeves, then to his wrist watch, then to his veiny hand holding on the steering wheel as he started driving.
It was a moment of silence at first as he drove while I just gazed on the road in front of us. Cars. Traffic. Stop lights. Sometimes I would sneak some glances on Connor, but all I see was he was too busy driving. His green eyes were focused, which made me feel like he was hiding something. Normally, he would be the cheerful self.
"Connor?"
He did not look at me but answered with, "Yeah?"
"Are you okay?"
He suddenly turned to me with a face full of surprise. "Yeah, why wouldn't I be?"
I scratched my head upon seeing his reaction, in which I regretted asking. "Oh, you're just... unusually quiet."
"Me?" He gave a childish chuckle. "Nope. How's your day by the way?"
My friends surprised me. Brianna explained to me about her crazy sister. That stupid boyfriend didn't greet me.
"It's okay. Just like any other day."
"And I'm sure today won't be like any other day after tonight." He gave a flirty wink which made my whole body heat up. My face obviously showed that I was shocked with his move, which made him laugh even harder.
"Relax, I'm just joking. I mean, we're just going to have a good birthday dinner, unless you want more."
My eyes grew wide after hearing that, and I wished he would just focus on driving instead. My whole body tensed up, in which I myself did not understand which part, but I wanted it to end... did I?
"Woah, again, I'm just lighting up the mood." Connor sensed that I was too tensed up. Was I too obvious?
I rolled my eyes and laughed it off. "Wow, you seriously know how to lighten up the mood."
Connor then returned to driving but this time, he was smiling.
At around twenty minutes later, we arrived at a fancy building which I thought was residential area, but Connor said it was a restaurant. I scanned the building and read the word, "Aureole".
That restaurant was definitely not familiar to me, so I did not know what to expect. I hoped that it wasn't anything fancy.
"Jessamine, shall we?"
Beside him, I felt like a midget again. Connor wasn't a six footer, but me standing beside him made him look like one. Now that I was looking at the both of us, how we're heading inside the restaurant, I couldn't help but think that this might be a date.
