Chapter Sixty-Four: Stop being such a pessimist.

I knew this would happen, but I wouldn't blame him for trying.

A part of me was mad at myself for thinking that I actually owed him. Why? He was helpful during my times of need, especially when I got into that accident. He was there for me, taking care of me.

But no, I should never, ever say yes because I felt like I owed him. But anyway, I just broke up with Finn, despite my heart suddenly longing for him right now. I wanted to return to his arms and tell him that I am sorry and that I am willing to take back everything and...and...

My mind was a confused wreck right now.

I forced an awkward laugh after he dropped the question, which I was debating whether to play it nice or reject him immediately. "Oh uhm..." My face reddened as blood rushed to my cheeks.

And despite me not praying for the gods, or maybe the gods could sense that I was in trouble, there was a sound of the door closing, followed by footsteps approaching.

"Connor?"

Connor and I turned to see Mr. and Mrs. Daye, both of them sweaty, wearing jogging pants. Mr. Daye was talking on the phone while Mrs. Daye twitched her lip upon seeing me. Nice to meet you too, Mrs. Daye.

"Mom! Dad!" Connor stood up, so I stood up also. I wanted to bet with myself which one would be more awkward, Connor's proposal or his parents coming right now.

"Connor, a word?" Mrs. Daye remained classy despite the tight jogging pants. She maintained her poise, waiting for Connor to wipe his lips.

Mr. Daye was still busy on his phone, but started wandering off upstairs. Connor smiled at me and went to his mother as they went inside the room.

Okay, so... should I use this moment to plot my escape? Maybe use the table cloth and tie it on a heavy furniture and use it to go down through the window, except I was in the first floor...

With all the ideas for an escape, I ended up finishing my food instead, and waited for Connor to finish the talk with his mother. With Mrs. Daye's evident disappointment the moment she saw my face, it's probably about me. But not going to lie, I was also thankful that they came and saved me from the awkwardness of rejecting Connor.

"Mom, can you stop?" A frustrated Connor came out of the room and approached me. "Jessamine, I'm so sorry but..."

"You're being ridiculous, son." Mrs. Daye tried not to shout back at Connor but I could feel her anger boiling judging from her face.

"Whatever." Connor rolled his eyes and turned to me. "Jessamine? Do you want a ride home?"

I nervously stood up and denied out of politeness, because I was half-scared of his mother and half-scared of Connor who's going to ask the same thing again if he drives me home. I didn't want to be on his mother's bad side, since her family was my only source of income, and my source of scholarship.

"It's okay Jess..."

"She said no, Connor. You don't want to force a girl into doing something she doesn't like, right?"

Fear registered in me with the way Mrs. Daye darted her eyes at her own son. Something tells me I shouldn't interfere anymore.

"Listen to your mom." I whispered to him discreetly as I grabbed my bag. "Don't worry about me."

Mrs. Daye kept a straight face while I grabbed my bag and walked away from Connor's house, hurriedly in order to avoid any more of Connor's persistence.
