Maddie's P.O.V.

“Maddie, can I talk to you for a sec?” Jen asks me and leads me to her room.

“Sure, what is it?”

She sat on the edge of her bed before she began to speak. “Okay, first off, this house isn't big enough for the three of us, and you know that.”

“Where are you going with this?”

“I've been looking at houses lately, and, I think I've found the one for us.It's five bedrooms, and it's about twenty minutes away from here. So, that means, we're moving!”

“Wait, does that mean we have to switch schools?” I couldn't hide the amount of concern in my voice.

“No, you'll stay where you're at.”

Her phone rang.

“Hold on, I should get this. It's important.”

She stepped aside, and sounded optimistic, well, at first.

“Okay, yeah, well. . .” her voice trailed off. “Uh-huh, okay, thanks, bye.”

She sighed.

“What's wrong? Is everything all right?” I asked.

“When you were in the facility all those months, the cast had to meet up for Comic Con, back in July.”

It's September now.

“Well, I have to do more interviews with the cast of X-Men, you know, because we finished filming and I'm getting really busy lately. I've been to several of the premieres, but after those comes the interviews, you know that.”

I repeat, “Where are you going with this?”

“I'm dreading it because. . .Nick is going to be there. He's my co-star, you remember him, right? We dated long ago, but he means nothing to me now. We're not even friends. We're more like. . .acquaintances. Yeah, that's a better word for it. They want to bring us all together one last time for an interview, and then we leave to start filming Mockingjay.”

I remember him. They did date long ago.

“I meant to ask, do I have to stay with your parents again?”

“Remember when you didn't come to Hawaii with us and I told you I'd make it up to you?”

Before I could respond, she continued. “I'm about to make it up to you. First, we'll finish shooting in Atlanta, and then we're going to Paris!”

I gasped. “Paris?! As in, Paris, France?

“Where else is there a Paris at?”

“This is amazing! Thank you, Jen! I love you!” Those last three words I meant with all of my heart. Then I gave her a big hug.

I couldn't contain my excitement, so I ran downstairs while shouting, “Jason, we're going to Paris! Can you believe it?”

He seemed stunned. “What do you mean, 'we're going to Paris'?”

“Exactly that! Jen is gonna start filming Mockingjay, you know, the third book in the Hunger Games series, and we're going to Paris! Isn't this exciting?”

Paris: the city of love and romance. I can't wait to get there. I know it's calling for me.

Jason wasn't as excited as I was.

“What's wrong?”

I get the silent treatment.

“Really, Jason, you can tell me if there's something wrong.”

“I'm happy to be going. . .does she travel a lot?”

“Well, yeah, she's an actress. It's part of the job.”

He was turning pale.

“Are you okay? You're looking a little pale, there.”

He swallowed down. “Uh, yeah. It's just that. . .”

“Speak up! What is it?” I pressed further.

“I'm afraid of heights!” he said just a little too loudly. “There. I said it. Okay? That's my secret. I hate airplanes. I made Macy drive all the way here from Chicago.”

“Oh,” was all I could think of to say.

“This time, I can't take a car there. It's overseas. And the only way is a plane. Or a boat, but boats are just as bad as planes.”

“It's okay, we can help you get through this.”

“How?” he snapped at me. “You can't just tell a person to stop being afraid and they'll magically stop. It doesn't work that way, Maddie.”

“I know,” I say softly. “Maybe you can go to a therapist or something? I don't know.”

“The last thing I want to do is tell a stranger about my problems.”

“Okay, okay. I'll think of something.”

He returned to his studying while I went upstairs.

“How'd he handle it?” Jen asked.

“Not so great. Turns out he's deathly afraid of heights. He might refuse to come on the plane with us. What can we do?”

“We have to do the only thing we can do: convince him that heights aren't as bad as he thinks they are.”

“How are we supposed to do that?

“Well,” she said. “We could take him skydiving.”

“What?!” I say loudly. “You think that jumping out of a plane will make him feel safer?!”

“Hey, it's worth a shot. If he lands safely---which he probably will---then he'll think he's safe. Maybe it's best that he face his fears, therefore he will overcome them.”

“I guess it's worth a shot. All right. Let's do it.”
