At Least It Was Interesting - 30 years ago
"Don't laugh at me!" David complained, but you could tell by the tone of his voice that he had already resigned himself to this. "So, things didn't exactly go according to plan."
"A week. Your little charade lasted a week, David." Pong laughed at his friends expense. As soon as a meeting was scheduled between David's parents and the school's principle he knew it was over. "They expelled you, right?" All David did was nod. "If you had just listened to me, this never would have happened. It was a bad idea from the start."
"But it worked in junior high!" Pong shook his head as David took a seat beside of him in the school hallway. It was possibly the last time they would be together at that particular place.
"This is UA, Dave. You're not gonna trick them that easily." David made a disgusted face.
"Don't call me that." He protested.
"Fine. I just don't understand how you didn't see this coming."
"I did! I just thought I would last a little longer." He responded. "Let's be honest, despite my tendency for lying, I am a model student. I thought if they saw my grades, it would be okay?"
"No. No it wouldn't."
"Okay, maybe it wouldn't." David finally admitted his mistake. This didn't happen often.
"Hey, your still coming to the Sports Festival, right?" Pong asked.
"Of course? I have to see you kick some. Can't do that through a tv." David said. "I'd even skip school to come. Hopefully I'll be in one by then. I'll have to go over my back-up plans."
"You'll be fine. You always bounce back." They sat for a moment, listening to the sound of David's father apologizing profusely to the principle.
"Hey, how's your dad?" David asked. Pong grimaced.
"He's okay. Could be better, could be worse." He sighed. "As much as I love making fun of you, it's gonna suck not having you here."
"Aw, I knew you cared." Sarcasm, and then. "Yeah, I was really beginning to like it here."
Inside of the room a small argument broke out. It seemed David's mom began snickering at their situation.
"At least it was interesting?" David looked at Pong, who shrugged.
"Sure, it was interesting."
