As Kanan sat there next to his hurt Padawan, he felt his chest tighten from the immense pain he was going through. "How could I let this happen, It's all my fault" was the only thing in the older Jedi's mind. He squeezed Ezra's hand tightly, like he was begging him to wake up to give him some sign that he was still in there....but nothing..
"Kanan Jarrus" The doctor spoke, gently touching the Jedi's shoulder "We have to continue running tests and treating Ezra" . Kanan looked up at the doctor and saw the look in his eyes and suddenly.....the man in the white coat shook his head gently. At that moment Kanan felt tears well up in his eyes once again as he looked down.
The jedi knew what the doctor wanted so he slowly nodded and got up, glancing at Ezra one more time. He then said in a quiet voice "...I'm sorry Ezra.." Then the Knight turned around and started heading to the exit but when he wasnt looking...The Padawan shifted in his sleep at Kanan's words...
AT THE GHOST....
The doctor had sent the rest of the crew back to the ship, telling them that there was no need for them to stay in front of the med-bay. And after a lot of convincing the crew agreed and went back...
IN THE COMMON ROOM...
Everyone was silent, the atmopshere in the room wasnt pleasant at all. The crew was waiting for Kanan to arrive.
"I cant believe this..." Sabine suddenly spoke "How could we let this happen ??"
Hera looked towards the girl with tired eyes, she had nothing to say back. Deep down Hera was also beating herself up for not being there when their youngest crew member needed them.
"No point in dwelling on what we could have done different. We have to face reality...Ezra is.." Zeb started, trying to say something that would bring all of them back to reality but the truth was he was feeling no different than the rest of them.
Suddenly the door of the common room shifted open, revealing a brown haired figure.
"Kanan" Hera spoke turning to the man as he approached them. It was clear Kanan wasnt doing well either, he had dried up tears on his cheeks, his eyes were dull..tired. Full of regret and sadness as he leaned on the wall. The crew looked at him with hopeful eyes which brought Kanan down even more cuz he knew that what they were hoping for wasnt going to happen and after a few moments The Jedi said "The doctor said he will run more tests on Ezra...so we can be sure..."
Silence fell over the room once again as everyone looked down, the dull and dark atmosphere was back and their minds were making up the worst possible scenarios...
"He's...He's really not going to be able to talk again...is he ?"Sabine suddenly spoke. Kanan's gaze fell down to the floor as he muttered "..Yes"......
2 WEEKS LATER......
The crew was in the common room, eating in silence. They took these 2 weeks to educate themselves on mutism and how to help. They also learned the basics of sign languge so they can understand what's Ezra saying. The doctor had told them that as soon as Ezra wakes up and starts recovering they will start teaching him sign language too, untill then they will communicate through writing.
The crew finnished their food and were now just relaxing inside the common room. The doctor told them that Ezra's injuries were getting better, he wont be able to walk for a bit more time but he would heal eventually. But......The medical department ran countless tests and found no treatment options for Ezra's voice, it was gone.
Suddenly there was an incoming transmission from Commander Sato, Hera put him on and the hologram appeared. Sato seemed to be smiling gently as he simply said "He's awake".
The crew's eyes widened as they practically bolted from the common room, out of the Ghost and towards the rebel base where the medical wing was. In a matter of 5 minutes they were in front of the med-bay door. The doctor came out to greet them before they went in "Ghost crew" he said
"How is he ??" Kanan asked frantically as the doctor gently answered "He's doing alright, he had woken up a few hours ago but needed time to process what had happened to him and...accept the fact he was now mute so we only called you to come now since he calmed down"
"How did he take it ?" Zeb asked and the doc looked towards him "The same way anyone would after finding out but he was as calm as he could be in that situation...Come, you should see him"
The crew took in deep breaths, they felt really nervous and didnt know how to react themselves but they knew that Ezra needed support right now and for them to be there for him....
IN THE MED-BAY....
The crew was now inside and their gazes fell upon the med-bay bed. There was Ezra, awake and in a sitting position. He looked towards the crew and then specifically Kanan. At that moment he opened his mouth to speak as an instinct but...nothing came out.....
The crew came closer to him and at that moment in a swift move Kanan hugged the smaller boy. Ezra was quite shocked as he looked towards the rest from Kanan's shoulder. Sabine and Hera were crying with a smile on their faces and clear relief in their eyes. Zeb gave the kid a thumbs up and Chopper hit the boy's bed, almost as if also trying to comfort him. Ezra then hugged Kanan back, burying his head in his Master's shoulder. He felt the warmth of Kanan's body, comforting and gently squeezing him, almost like he was clinging onto the smaller boy for dear life. Ezra felt a rush of emotions but he also realised that truely...he wasnt alone in this....
