Roya was the first to act. They clutched the holy symbol around their neck and whispered a prayer to Solan. Cedric, Ella, Roya, and Zerai began to glow with sunlight. Then, Roya stepped away from Cedric.
Ten knights wearing armor charged forward. They were emblazoned with the symbol of Atheira, and they all wielded pikes. Their weapons flashed with blue light as they struck Zerai and Ella. Soon, blood was splattered all across the ground and the two front line warriors were covered with scorched gouges.
The remaining cleric of Atheira stepped forward and held her hand out. A bolt of blue light flew towards Roya. It slammed into Roya's neck, and they coughed a wad of blood onto the ground. It took everything they had to remain focused on their spell.
Ella retaliated with everything she had. Armor turned to butter before the sheer force of her blade, and a few of the church guards were cut down by a barrage of swings, slashes, and wide arcs of Ella's blade.
Stepping forward were warriors wielding shortbows. Arrows lodged themselves into Ella and Zerai, and both of them were beginning to struggle.
Cedric extended his hands outwards, and drew his hands through the air. A wall of flames cut through the warriors that were engaged onto Ella and Zerai. The two stepped back to see many of their opponents badly scorched by the blaze.
Aaron extended the wand forward, and tip flashed. Then, an explosion engulfed Cedric, Ella, and Zerai. Both Cedric and Ella stepped back, and the sunlight that glowed around them flashed. Unfortunately, the wall of flames died down as Cedric couldn't keep his focus. A wave of warriors rushed towards an injured group.
Weapons clashed and battered one another as the opposition surged forwards. Zerai was barely able to stand, and Ella wasn't looking good either. In desperation, Zerai held his blade to the sky, and a column of flame smited several of his opponents. Then, he leapt back, and his body's burns and gouges began to heal themselves.
Roya clutched the symbol of the sun that lay around their neck and shouted a prayer.
"O' glorious Solan, mother of sunlight, shine your light upon these brave souls!" Roya shouted, their voice somewhat raspy from the wound in their throat. Just for a moment, everyone could swear the shone just a bit brighter. Ella and Zerai's wounds healed even more than they had before.
It was just barely enough to last them through the resurging church warriors. With each of their strikes, their pikes flashed with blue light, and the gouges and cuts were accompanied by the searing pain of radiant power.
The cleric of Atheira looked at Roya again angrily. She pointed her finger, and a blue bolt of divine radiance slammed into Roya. They fell to the ground with two large marks burned into them by the radiant light. The sunlight glowing from all four of them faded down to nothing.
Ella charged forwards, cutting down the injured warriors that stood before her with her greatsword. She was coated in crimson, and she laughed as she cut through the enemy warriors. Then, she steeled herself for a counterattack.
Thankfully, she had been prepared for the counterattack that came. She was able to deflect some of the daggers, and weather whichever ones did end up striking her. Crimson poured onto the ground, but she paid no mind to it.
A flame appeared above Cedric's hand, and it hurled itself at one of Ella's attackers. It slammed into one of them, causing them to reel back in pain. Then, Cedric muttered a word under his breath, and Roya's body briefly glowed with emerald green. The scorch mark near their neck healed over just enough for Roya's eyes to flutter open.
"Just buy time, buy time." Cedric whispered to himself.
