We continued to move from tree to tree. By now, I was fully healed. However, Itachi had still refused to put me down, against all my pleading.
We were still moving when I heard a voice calling out to us. I peeked over Itachi's shoulder to see who it was. I could just make out a figure following us, but with my still-recovering eyes, I couldn't see who it was. I strained my eyes to try and see better. The closer he got, the clearer his figure became.
Eventually, I was able to see enough to know who was following us. "Is that Sasuke?" I pat Itachi's shoulder to gain his attention. "Itachi, you can put me down now".
With his little brother now following us, he complied and we continued to ignore him as we made our way to Kabuto.
"Is that you, Itachi?" Sasuke asked, completely ignoring my presence.
I felt my blood boil in anger. He tried to kill me and sent me an apology that didn't even sound sincere, and here he was, acting like I didn't exist. Or better yet, that none of that meant anything.
I clenched my fists. "We're a little busy here, Sasuke. Why don't you try having someone else killed for a change?" I answered, sarcastically.
He rolled his eyes. "I said I was sorry".
"And I said it was gonna take a lot more than a simple apology to get me to forgive you!" Like giving me a sincere apology that wasn't laced with sarcasm and anger.
I don't know what it was that sent him over the edge – whether it was my words or that Itachi had yet to so much as glance at his little brother – but Sasuke suddenly activated his Susanoo in an effort to stop us in our tracks, only to get knocked back by my own Susanoo.
"Go away, Sasuke!"
Itachi gave me a look that said I shouldn't be using my chakra after what just happened. Taking a deep breath to calm down, I deactivated my Susanoo and decided not to butt in anymore.
"I'm impressed," Itachi said, turning his head to look behind him. "I didn't know you had been able to master it as well, Sasuke".
He glanced at me and I turned to the front. I didn't need to see him to know the look he was giving me. 'Why didn't you say anything?'
"But what are you even doing here? You're dead!" Sasuke pointed out.
"Kabuto's Jutsu, I've become a reanimated shinobi," Itachi explained. "No time to talk. I'll explain later". I snickered at him brushing off his brother, earning a glare from the latter.
"You're the one who told me to come and find you once I had the same eyes as you! Now you wanna run away from me? Are you running out of guilt for being a liar? You don't have the courage to tell me the truth!" I clenched my fists. It took all of my self-restraint not to say anything. "I already know everything about you anyway. That's why I'm going to destroy the Hidden Leaf!"
I rolled my eyes. 'He still hasn't given up on that?'
"I told you before when we fought against each other," Itachi responded, calmly. "We each live inside our own fantasies. I asked you to think about it that way and about how one's reality might be an illusion. However, my truth is real".
"I no longer live inside an illusion. I can see through Genjutsu. These eyes are your eyes!"
Itachi and I exchanged glances. 'Colour me impressed. He actually did it'. "And yet, you still fail to see what he saw," I muttered.
"I can tell part of you is still the same, but I've heard from others' what's happened to you. I know how much you've changed". I was kind of glad Itachi didn't mention Naruto, or else Sasuke would lose his shit.
