Everyone had been getting by, even without a Hokage. I knew it wouldn't be long before the next one was chosen. None of the Five Great Nations could survive long without a leader.
One day, Kakashi Sensei asked to have lunch with me and Sasuke. We got some training done before we headed over to the teahouse. When we got there, Kakashi Sensei was already outside (early for once) with Kurenai and Asuma Sensei. The two quickly vanished then Kakashi Sensei turned to us. "Sorry guys, but I'm going to have to take a raincheck".
We were about to turn away when he called out, "Not you, (Y/N). I need you for something".
Sasuke turned to me. I gave him a nod signalling that it was okay, then he vanished. I turned back to Kakashi Sensei and raised an eyebrow at him signalling him to explain. "There are two strangers in the village. I need you to help me apprehend them. I need your eyes".
"Which ones?" I asked, an eyebrow raised.
"Both". I nodded. "No matter what, you must not lose focus".
I nodded to him and he led me to where we needed to go. I arrived to see Kurenai Sensei and Asuma Sensei fighting two men in black robes with red clouds: one on the footpath and the other standing on the water. Kakashi Sensei went to the one on the footpath while I apprehended the person on the water.
I appeared next to him holding a kunai, but as soon as I looked into his eyes, all thoughts escaped my mind. There in front of me was the man I had promised my very being to, my first love, Itachi Uchiha. The shock at seeing him after six long years prompting me to subconsciously loosen my grip on my kunai. At least, until I heard Kakashi Sensei yell, "(Y/N), don't lose focus!" I tightened my grip on my kunai before it fell out of my hands and stared at him with hatred. Not for me, but for what he did to Sasuke.
"What were you thinking, bringing a kid into this, Kakashi?" Asuma Sensei asked Kakashi Sensei.
"Not only does she have the Sharingan, but she also has eyes that enable her to assess the location and see things that the rest of us can't. Not only that, but it was Itachi who trained her to use those abilities her father left her," Kakashi Sensei explained. I smirked. With Kakashi Sensei now by my side and Itachi surrounded, I dropped my hand.
"Well, well, looks like you've been holding out on me, Itachi," his partner butted in. I rolled my eyes.
Kakashi Sensei and Itachi exchanged blows, but the latter quickly gained the upper hand by putting Kakashi Sensei in a Genjutsu. About three seconds later, he fell. I rushed over to him. I looked up at Itachi, heartbreak and betrayal written on my face.
"This thing you've come for, is it Sasuke?" Kakashi Sensei asked, still weakened from the Genjutsu. I narrowed my eyes and readied my kunai, just in case.
"No, it's the Fourth Hokage's legacy," Itachi replied.
'The Fourth Hokage's legacy...? The Nine-Tailed Fox!' My eyes widened. "What do you want with Naruto?" I demanded, accidentally blurting out that I knew about Naruto and the Nine-Tailed Fox. Everyone turned to look at me and I clamped my mouth shut.
We all turned back to Itachi. "You're not the only ones, are you?" Kakashi Sensei pointed out. "There are seven more of you, searching, hunting. I know all about you. You call yourselves the Akatsuki".
'The Akatsuki...?' My eyes widened. "Wait, I've heard of them!". Kurenai Sensei and Asuma Sensei both turned to look at me, so I explained, "I like to read and do research in my spare time. One day, I picked up a book and in it, there was a chapter on the Akatsuki. Apparently, they're a rogue organisation filled with S-rank criminals that are all in the Bingo Book". I glanced at Itachi, who was looking at me with what seemed to be wonder.
Itachi and Kisame stiffened. "We'll take Kakashi and (Y/N) with us," Itachi ordered Kisame. "We don't need the others. Get rid of them".
I readied my kunai for a fight when Guy Sensei showed up. Knowing they no longer stood a chance, they fled. Then Kakashi Sensei collapsed.
Staring at the spot my fiancé had been, I let a single tear fall down my cheek. I quickly wiped the tear before anyone could see, then turned to the four Sensei. "Can you take care of my Sensei? I'm going home to wait for Sasuke so I can deliver the news to him myself". Then I disappeared.
I got home and waited for my roommate to return, my mind and heart filled with Itachi.
Suddenly, my door burst open and Sasuke rushed in. "(Y/N), Itachi's back!" he practically yelled.
"I know," I replied. His eyes widened, so I explained. "That mission Kakashi Sensei asked me to go with him to was about Itachi and his partner".
"He's going after Naruto". My eyes widened. Without another word, I grabbed my bag and ran after him. As we ran to find Naruto and his teacher, who had left town to find the next Hokage, I told him about our encounter.
After what seemed like forever, we found Itachi and Kisame standing in front of Naruto. I could practically feel the anger radiating off of Sasuke. I watched as he activated the Chidori and raced towards his older brother. Suddenly, Itachi caught his hand and I flinched as I heard a faint cracking sound. I rushed towards him and moved to heal his broken wrist.
As I was kneeling next to Sasuke, a puff of smoke filled the hallway. When the smoke cleared, there was a toad with a very familiar white-haired man on top of it. "Uncle Jiraiya?!"
That's when he noticed me. "Is that you (Y/N)? Wow, you've grown so big!"
I rolled my eyes. "As much as I would love to catch up, do you really think it's the time for that?"
Suddenly, he realised what was going on. "Right, first we have to deal with your fiancé".
Naruto looked very confused, and this time I couldn't blame him. "Wait, fiancé?!"
I rolled my eyes again as we turned our focus back to the two Akatsuki members. Naruto and I were forced to watch as Itachi easily defeated Sasuke. Itachi used his Mangekyō Sharingan on him, just like he did that night. By the time it was over, Sasuke was unconscious, just like Kakashi Sensei.
I rushed over to him. "He was too weak," Itachi said from behind me.
Something inside me snapped. "Shut up! You don't get to talk, not after everything you've done!" I could feel the darkness inside of me take over, and I let it.
I was preparing to unseal the curse mark when I heard Uncle Jiraiya's voice. "You don't want to do that". I looked over at him, my Sharingan activated. "I don't think it's wise to use up all your chakra right now, or else you could end up like your friend over there. Besides, I don't think Kakashi will be too happy. Plus, do you really want to go through that pain?" Knowing he had a point, I calmed down, my eyes back to normal. I clutched my cursed mark as I continued to stare at Itachi with the same hatred that I felt for him.
Suddenly, the hallway started to look like a mouth. It took great effort to stay away from the walls. Instead of sticking around for the fireworks, Itachi and Kisame escaped using the Amaterasu; the Eternal Black Flame of the Mangekyō Sharingan. Shortly after, Guy Sensei showed up.
Guy Sensei grabbed Sasuke to take him back to the village. After a short conversation with Uncle Jiraiya, I went with Guy Sensei.
